JAMES CITY COUNTY-10 dead geese found in a James City County neighborhood had been shot.
They were found by Donald Brock's wife last Saturday morning while she was walking the dog.
"Some of them were in the water. There were two laying on the bank and one big pile of feathers lying right next to the road," he stated.
The pond in Cypress Point is fed by the Chickahominy River. Authorities believe they were shot in another location and then dumped.
Residents agree because they don't recall hearing any gunfire and investigators didn't find shell casings in the area.
The Virginia Gazette reports that authorities know the type of firearm that was used, but they aren't releasing that information while the investigation is underway.
While it's illegal to hunt migratory Canadian geese, hunting of resident geese in Virginia runs from September 1-25.
The penalty for killing geese out of season is a fine up of up to $1,000 and six months in jail.
If you know anything about this incident, you can call the Wildlife Crimeline at 800-237-5712 or the Va. Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries regional office at 1-804-829-6580.
