ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Carmelo Anthony saw the wall of reporters and knew immediately who was being surrounded.
Back in New York, it would be Jeremy Lin.
But with All-Star weekend in Orlando, the focus is shifting back to where it was to start the season, to Dwight Howard's future.
That means Howard gets the same questions Anthony was peppered with last year during the NBA's midseason break, just before he was traded.
"Thank you, Dwight!" Anthony yelled. "It's your turn!"
The center has asked for a trade, but he's still here and there's no telling for how much longer. The Magic could deal him before the March 15 trade deadline, or hold onto him all season and risk losing him while getting nothing back in July.
Howard didn't want to discuss any of that Friday.
"All the other stuff can wait," Howard said. "I just want people to have fun and enjoy themselves. This is All-Star weekend. This is a time of celebration for guys who've had great first halves and guys who have never even seen this."
Howard's table was between Anthony and LeBron James, two of the league's best-known stars. Yet neither had anywhere near the attention of Howard, and Anthony was glad to yield the spotlight after his status overshadowed last year's festivities in Los Angeles.
"I'm glad it's not me anymore," Anthony said.
James went through the free agency circus the season before, and acknowledged that it wore on him.
"Yeah, absolutely," James said. "I know exactly what he's going through. It's a tough situation but he's going to handle it. He's a man. He's going to handle it. He's going to do what's best for him."
Lin wasn't forgotten, even after James and the Heat on Thursday forced him into the worst game since he emerged as the NBA's biggest story earlier this month. Many All-Stars were asked about the Knicks guard, who was playing only in Friday's Rising Stars Challenge featuring rookies and second-year players yet was given his own evening press conference to accommodate the large media interest.
Howard said every time he watches TV, he sees something about Lin, the NBA's first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent. He was asked if there was anything that could stop the undrafted guard from Harvard.
"Uh, he hasn't gone up against the Great Wall of Orlando yet," Howard said.
This wall may be moveable.
The Magic have given Howard's agent permission to discuss deals with the Nets, Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, and there was plenty of speculation he could be dealt even before the season began, just as Chris Paul was.
That would have created an awkward All-Star reunion.
Howard literally towers over this city, his face pictured on billboards overlooking the interstate and on a giant Adidas ad high atop the outside of the Amway Center. This region caters to visitors, but didn't have to consider how it would have welcomed Howard.
"I'm here, so it doesn't matter what would've or should've happened," he said. "But you know I'm here and we want to have a great time. I'm looking forward to all the events and showing everybody my city."
With its new arena in just its second season, Orlando is hosting the All-Star game for the first time in 20 years. The 1992 game was one of the NBA's most memorable, with Magic Johnson winning MVP honors only a few months after he had announced he was retiring after contracting the HIV virus.
Even Shaquille O'Neal, who has been critical of Howard in the past, says he hopes the MVP this time goes to Howard. O'Neal started his career with the Magic before bolting as a free agent, and he said recently it would be a "travesty" if Howard leaves.
If fans fear Howard following Shaq's path, he said they never tell him.
"Whatever you decide to do, we're behind you 100 percent," they say, according to Howard.
"They've been great," Howard added. "Despite what people may say or think, the fans here have always been great to me. I really appreciate it. They've showed me nothing but love from Day 1 and I've done the same thing. This city means a lot to me."
Howard said he was looking forward to playing this weekend with James, Anthony and Wade, who join league MVP Derrick Rose in the powerful Eastern Conference starting lineup.
The West is an L.A. story, with Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum of the Lakers joining the Clippers' Paul and Blake Griffin. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant rounds out the first five.
The All-Star weekend would have been in jeopardy had the lockout lasted much longer. An agreement was reached during Thanksgiving weekend and the season opened on Christmas, allowing for a 66-game schedule.
The play has been sloppy and injuries have piled up as players navigate a schedule that forced them to play on three straight nights for the first time since 1999, following the last work stoppage. All the All-Stars said they were eager to be here, even though many probably would benefit from the rest.
And Wade said ugly play won't be a problem Sunday night.
"I think Sunday is going to be great," he said. "I think players are obviously with all these games, the body is feeling a little certain way right now. We're going to enjoying this break, but Sunday's going to be just competitive. It's going to be exciting for the fans to watch."

Paris Hilton "Drunk Text" Video: Released, Removed From YouTube!
Paris Hilton is back! Or was ... if only for a few hours!
The ho-tel heiress' new single, "Drunk Text," was briefly leaked online today before being yanked off of YouTube within hours. What's it about, you ask?
Heck if we know, but the girl cannot sing. At all.
Not that she even tries, really. Hilton raps/speaks monotonously over the beat... and that's it. The music video was released today, but quickly pulled from YouTube with little explanation other than a violation of a copyright claim by Black Hole Recordings.
Still, the instant classic video was up long enough for some pics to be screen grabbed, and for numerous people who heard it to report on its epicness.
Some choice lyrics: "If you take the word 'sex' and mix it with 'texting,' it's called 'sexting'/When you add drunk sexting, the words just don't make sense."

This particular organization is very close to my heart. A couple of years ago, City Meals on Wheels, delivered food to my grandmother daily. She had limited mobility, so to have someone come, around the same time everyday with a warm meal was very special to her. Not only did they provide a warm, delicious, healthy meal, they also always provided her with a good conversation and a guaranteed visitor. VIENNA, Austria (AP) ? An avalanche buried and seriously injured the second son of Dutch Queen Beatrix while he skied off marked trails Friday in the westernmost corner of Austria and he was rushed to the intensive care unit of an Innsbruck hospital, officials said.
The Dutch government, which initially said the 43-year-old's life was in danger later issued an update saying "his condition is stable but not out of danger."
"Her Majesty the Queen and (Friso's wife) Princess Mabel are with Prince Friso," the Dutch statement said, adding that "doctors treating him will only be able to give a prognosis in a matter of days."
Stefan Jochum, a spokesman for the municipality of Lech and its ski regions, said the accident happened early Friday afternoon as the prince was on slopes away from the marked Lech ski runs and laden with snow after weeks of record falls. He said the prince was accompanied by three other skiers. Other officials said only one other person was with Friso.
The Lech municipal office said a regional avalanche warning issued for the day was four on the five-point scale, meaning the danger was high.
"A snow slide came down and the prince was buried as the only member of the group" said Jochum in a telephone interview. A rescue helicopter was on the scene within minutes and after Friso was located, he was resuscitated and flown to the hospital, Jochum said.
The Austria Press Agency cited Lech Mayor Ludwig Muxel as saying Friso was buried for about 20 minutes by a snow mass that measured around 30 meters (more than 30 yards) by 40 meters (more than 40 yards) when it hit him.
Spokeswoman Pia Herbst of the Lech region tourist authority said rescuers found Friso through signals of an avalanche transceiver on his body.
Dutch national broadcaster NOS broke into its regular programming to give the story rolling minute-to-minute coverage as the news broke, speaking to medical experts and avalanche specialists.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, in comments carried by NOS radio, said he had told the queen and the prince's wife that "the whole Dutch people sympathizes with them very intensely."
"The situation is that the prince is stable, but his life not yet out of danger, and (in) the coming days, the expectation is that further prognoses will follow."
"There's nothing more (to say) than that the best doctors are there," he said. "Austria naturally has very good medical care, we are fully confident in them ? but further we really just have to wait."
Online polls done around the April 30 Queen's Day national holiday reflect a high degree of affection for the royals. The last one in 2011 showed that three-quarters of 547 respondents were happy with the queen.
Friso was in Lech along with other members of the royal family, whose members ski regularly there. The upscale resort area has also been a popular winter holiday destination for Tom Cruise, the late Princess Diana and other celebrities.
The second of Beatrix's three sons, Friso gave up any claim to the Dutch throne to marry Dutch commoner Mabel Wisse Smit, in 2004. The pair have two daughters, Emma and Joanna. He most recently worked as financial director at Urenco, the European uranium-enrichment consortium.

The crucial moment in his life as a member of the Dutch nobility came with his 2003 engagement to then-commoner Wisse Smit.
After the pair announced their intention to marry in 2003, Dutch media revealed that Wisse Smit's previous friendships included contacts while she was in college with a well-known figure in the Dutch underworld, a drug dealer who was later slain.
The couple publicly acknowledged having been "naive and incomplete" during her vetting process before joining the royal family. Then-Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende signaled he could not recommend the marriage to parliament for approval.
They married anyway, a decision that meant Friso's removal from the line of succession.
The couple are still part of Beatrix's family and attend important royal functions. Mabel has been granted the title "Princess Mabel" and Friso has an array of noble titles, including "Prince of Oranje-Nassau" ? but not "Prince of the Netherlands."

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? The buildup for Danica Patrick's first Daytona 500 began in earnest at Thursday's annual media day, where auto racing's sweetheart was saddled with a full schedule of commitments.
Patrick was shuffled from interview to interview, answering questions and shooting promotions for her first full season in NASCAR. She couldn't even find solitude in the bathroom: an autograph seeker followed Patrick inside and patiently waited for the driver's signature.
Patrick will make her Sprint Cup Series debut in the Feb. 26 season-opening Daytona 500. It's the first of 10 races this year at NASCAR's top level driving for three-time champion Tony Stewart.
She's also racing for the championship in the second-tier Nationwide Series for JR Motorsports.
Her defection from the IndyCar Series is complete, and Patrick will be the center of the spotlight for Speedweeks at Daytona. She's fine with it, though, as seven years of running the Indianapolis 500 taught her how to handle intense attention.
"I think that if I had not experienced all the media crazy around this whole part of things it would have been somewhat overwhelming," she said. "My whole (public relations) team knows how it works and how to organize everything so it's done effectively and efficiently.
"But I feel good ? let's not forget I've been exposed to the Indy 500, which is one of the biggest races in the world, if not the biggest race in the world, and there's lots of media around that, too, and lots of hype."
NASCAR has been anxiously awaiting Patrick's move to stock cars because, as one of the most recognized athletes in the world, she'll bring attention to the series. Research shows she's already increased interest:
? According to The Nielsen Company, ratings for the 2010 Nationwide Series opener at Daytona were up 33 percent with her in the race from the 2009 ratings.
? Overall, 11 of the 13 Nationwide races Patrick ran in 2010 had better ratings than the 2009 events. Average viewership for her 13 events was up 9 percent.
? Patrick's merchandise sales last season ranked in the top 15 best-selling drivers at the NASCAR.com Superstore.
? Through last week, Patrick already ranked in the top 10 in merchandise sales in 2012.
? A survey last August of the NASCAR Fan Council showed that 80 percent of those polled agreed with the statement, "Danica Patrick is good for NASCAR."
? Nielsen N-Score data through January showed that Patrick ranks in the top 5 of most recognized NASCAR drivers among the U.S. population.
"There's so much interest with Danica coming over to NASCAR, I think it's going to really broaden our fan base," Lesa France Kennedy, the CEO of NASCAR sister company International Speedway Corp., said last month.
"When she shows up, it just has a different feel to it. She's a real dynamic individual to start with and I think it'll be interesting to see her compete on the track. There's certainly a spotlight, without a doubt, but she seems to do well with that. She seems to do well under pressure."
Patrick said she's prepared for the workload leading into the Daytona 500, and with the increased schedule in NASCAR. The IndyCar season was just 18 races; the Nationwide schedule is 33 races and next year, when she moves full time to the Sprint Cup Series, she'll have races on 38 weekends.
Dabbling in the Nationwide Series the past two years has prepared her for what to expect.
"Back a few years ago, I definitely was concerned with the work load that NASCAR schedules bring," she said. "But the last two years, I went from doing a 16-18 race season to about 30, and now it's going to be about 34 or 35 weekends, so it's really only an extra month worth of weekends so it's much more tolerable than jumping from Indy Car to NASCAR in one jump.
"I'm very good when I know what's coming. When I get surprised and things getting added on the schedule is when I get frustrated because expectation levels are everything for me.
"But not only from my perspective am I more comfortable now, but from my assistant's perspective and the help she gets from Junior Motorsports and Stewart-Hass, I think we all have a much better picture of how to do everything and how to keep it in line and how to help (the media) do your job."

A program on campus is encouraging students to get their hands dirty and learn more than just a few things about cars.
Central Oregon Community College?s automotive technology program gives students experience and education in automotive technology service and repair, which is taught through computer applications and hands-on skills practice.
The program offers students eight varying certificates and also an Associate of Applied Science Degree in automotive management. Each certificate focuses on a specific skill or area of interest. With such a variety in certificate options, the program gets the same kind of variety in its students.
?There?s no universal student that comes into our program,? said Ken Mays, the director of COCC?s automotive technology program. ?We have students who are deaf, students who have no legs, students who already have two or four year degrees and not just men, but also women. Everyone is welcome.?
Michael Webb is a student in his third term at COCC. He is seeking the Master Automotive Technician certificate
?I?m here to get the knowledge needed to pass the Automotive Service Excellence test, which will get me a job in a dealership or an independent shop,? said Webb.
Some students enroll in the program long term, while others enroll for the education the certificate briefs offer.
?Most students who get the small term certificates continue on,? said Mays. ?They like the training?
As with any program though, there are students who are not in it specifically for the degree.
?Sometimes when a person comes here, it?s because of a road block,? said Mays. ?They?re just doing this until they can bring up their seniority as a student.?

Boisjoly, a rocket maker for NASA contractor Morton Thiokol, became convinced months before the Challenger disaster that the rocket boosters were faulty. In a memo to his employer he said that they could cause "a catastrophe of the highest order -- loss of human life."

Boisjoly and four other colleagues warned that elastic seals on the boosters tended to stiffen and unseal in cold weather--a potential hazard even at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. And on the morning of the launch, the weather was cold.
In an interview with NPR three weeks after the incident, Boisjoly recounted that he recommended against the shuttle launch when subfreezing temperatures were expected. "We all knew if the seals failed, the shuttle would blow up," he said.
The nation was shocked by the explosion, which involved astronaut Christa McAuliffe, the first "Teacher in Space." All seven astronauts were killed when the shuttle fell apart 73 seconds after liftoff. A presidential commission determined that hot gases leaked through a joint of a booster rocket after takeoff and led to an explosion of rocket fuel.
The engineer told the Associated Press back in 1988, "When I realized what was happening, it absolutely destroyed me. It destroyed my career, my life, everything else."Still, though his whistleblowing was ignored, Boisjoly received awards from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for his efforts.

New Yorker Spike Lee was on the field when the Giants were presented with the Vince Lombardi trophy. He acknowledged being nervous as the Giants fought back a last-second comeback attempt from the New England Patriots and their quarterback, Tom Brady.
"Tom Brady ? I mean, that dude is dangerous! I never thought, 'It's in the bag.' But we prevailed though," he said.
When it came to predictions, Nick Cannon and Danny DeVito were both on the winning side, having picked the Giants. Adam Sandler felt the Patriots had the edge (though he was admirer of the Giants Victor Cruz's salsa dance: "I like watching him do it," he said).
Donnie Wahlberg spent time beside the Patriots bench just before kickoff. Asked which team he thought was going to win, he said: "The Patriots. I know it."

I grew up in a home darkened by domestic violence ? which I wrote about two years ago. My father was an angry and unhappy man who was not able to control his emotions, or his hands. I witnessed violence against my mother and felt powerless to stop it. When Refuge, the national domestic violence charity, asked me to become a patron, I accepted without hesitation. I accepted for my mother. As a child, there was little I could do to help her. But now I can give support and encouragement to women who live in the same sort of fear that she did.
Forty years ago Refuge opened the world?s first safe house for abused women and children in Chiswick, west London. Since then it has grown to become the country?s largest provider of domestic violence services. On any given day its services support more than 1,600 women and children on any given day. Refuge, and other women?s charities in the UK, are vibrant, innovative and resilient. But they are being stretched to breaking point. I was shocked to read a new report, by the Trust for London and Northern Rock Foundation, whichhighlights how cuts are crippling vital services such as women?s refuges. Local authority funding has been slashed by 31%, and Refuge has shouldered cuts to 50% of its contracts. On an average day last year 230 women were turned away from refuges because there was simply not enough space for them.
The impact of these cuts will be devastating. The financial footing of women?s charities has been shaky for many years; now it is in real danger of slipping into the abyss. Let me be quite clear about what is at stake here. Without services such as refuges, more women and children will be trapped in violent relationships. Domestic violence rarely peters out. On the contrary, abuse tends to escalate over time. If they can?t get help ? preferably at the earliest opportunity ? their stories may well have the most tragic of conclusions.
Last year I met an incredibly brave woman called Sharon de Souza. In 2008 Sharon?s daughter Cassie was brutally murdered by Cassie?s former partner in front of their two small children. At the time of her death, Cassie was trying to flee to a refuge. Sadly, her story is not an isolated one. Domestic violence kills two women every single week in England and Wales. If we don?t preserve vital escape routes for victims, this number ? already horrifically high ? will only rise.
My mother had no escape route. There were no refuges she could run to; no helplines to call; no advocates to speak out for her. No one came to help, even though everyone knew what was happening behind our closed doors. The small houses in our road were close together, and every Monday morning I walked to school with a bowed head, praying that I wouldn?t run into a neighbour who had heard the weekend?s rows. The police, when they were called, were little help. I remember hearing them say things like ?She must have provoked him?, or ?Well, Mrs Stewart, it takes two to make a fight?. They had no idea. My mother did nothing to provoke the violence she endured ? even if she had, violence is an unacceptable way of dealing with conflict.
Enormous progress has been made since then. Brick by brick, year by year, pioneering organisations like Refuge have built up a broad network of services that respond to the needs of victims sensitively and creatively ? albeit on a shoestring budget. Alongside refuges there are specialist services for black and minority ethnic women, staffed by experts in complex issues such as honour-based violence and forced marriage. Independent domestic violence advocates working out of police stations and courts act as the eyes and ears for women going through the legal system, ensuring that they get the protection they deserve. Women who choose not to go to a refuge can be visited by community outreach workers ? in their homes, on park benches, at community centres or libraries. Refuge even helps to find temporary foster places for animals, since they understand that women are often reluctant to flee abuse for fear of what will happen to the family pet.
We cannot risk losing this hard-won network of life-changing and life-saving services. We cannot stand by and watch as short-sighted budget decisions chip away at these services, cut by painful cut. Besides the obvious risk to human life, it is false economics. Domestic violence takes a heavy toll on the public purse, ringing up almost ?16bn a year in health, legal, medical and housing costs. Pulling the rug from under the services that prevent this crime and support its victims will only inflate costs further down the line.
Refuge ? along with other women?s charities ? is facing its toughest year to date. The gradual erosion of statutory funding has made Refuge even more reliant on voluntary income, but fundraising is an uphill battle. Domestic violence is still shrouded in myth, and too few people truly grasp its prevalence in this country. More money is given to the Donkey Sanctuary than to the UK?s two largest domestic violence charities.
It saddens me beyond description that women and children experiencing domestic violence today are being left to deal with fear and abuse on their own ? just as my mother was, more than 60 years ago. The government says that its ambition is ?nothing less than ending violence against women and girls?, but there is nothing ambitious about its relentless demolition of a sector that protects the most vulnerable members of our society.
