Why Ballmer doesn't want Office on the iPad

Over 120 million iPads have sold since their unveiling by the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs in April of 2010, yet Microsoft's flagship Office suite continues to be noticeably absent from the tablet.

But why?

There have been plenty of rumors that an iOS-compatible version of popular applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are in the pipeline, but so far nothing has materialized. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is "happy with the product that we're putting in market" and says it "makes sense on the devices like the Mac and the PC," while at the same time not commenting on the obvious elephant in the room -- the lack of iOS support.

If Microsoft wants Office on the iPad, then Office would be on the iPad. The company would even be willing to swallow Apple's 30-percent commission on apps sold through its App Store to make that happen if it were important. But Office is not on iOS because Microsoft doesn't want it there.

This isn't to say that some within Microsoft wouldn't like to see Office on iOS. One source described the prospect of making the suite available to the iPad user base as "a goldmine."

So why no Office for iOS?

There are several reasons. Let's examine a few.

First, making Office available to the tens of millions of iPad owners -- many of them business and enterprise users -- would seriously harm Microsoft's ability to sell Windows 8-powered tablets, even its own Surface and Surface Pro hardware. Putting Office on the iPad would eliminate one of the key reasons for enterprise to adopt tablets running Windows 8. ?

One less Windows 8-powetred tablet sold means one less Windows license sold.

Several OEM sources have also expressed concern at the prospect of Microsoft releasing a version of Office for iOS, fearing that the move would give the iPad even more traction -- if such a thing is possible? -- and send PC sales into an even steeper tailspin. PC sales are already in an unhappy state, and putting the Office suite on the platform could be a terminal tipping point for the industry as a whole.

Another problem is that Microsoft -- at least the Office division -- appears to be unfamiliar with the current app model as promoted by Apple. Microsoft is comfortable with pushing out with a new version of Office every few years, having it replace the older version. But this is not how apps work, and buyers -- consumers and enterprise alike -- like the new model of buying an app once and then receiving a continuous trickle of free updates over time.

Embracing apps would mean embracing a new way of doing business.

This is why we don't have the Office suite on our iPads.?

The Super Bowl trophy: where Tiffany meets the NFL?

17 hrs.

Outside of the NHL's Stanley Cup, the Vince Lombardi Trophy might be the most recognized trophy in all of sports.

That much you probably already knew. What you probably didn't know: The prize for winning the Super Bowl is seven pounds of sterling silver, handcrafted by jewelry icon Tiffany.

Tiffany, a $4 billion company, has made every Lombardi Trophy dating back to 1967. As the story goes, the original design was sketched on a cocktail napkin in front of then-NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle.

Tiffany and the NFL might seem like an odd match, but it's not.

"The core mission of the company is to celebrate important moments in people's lives," said Tiffany executive Tom O'Rourke, who has overseen the company's trophy business for almost eight years. "I can't imagine a more important moment for an athlete than receiving the championship trophy on the field after a victory."

The silver itself has a street value of about $3,500. But, if you add in the high-end labor to make it (there is no?glue! and its symbolism, the value is a little more difficult to assess.

"I would tell you that the trophy itself is priceless," O'Rourke said. "Whatever monetary value is?assigned to the trophy doesn't accurately present the work the athletes have put into it."

The NFL is a customer and does pay for the trophy.

More from CNBC: The NFL's 10 best cheerleading squads 2013

Sources tell CNBC that the Tiffany trophy business, which includes everything from Major League Baseball to PGA golf, is modestly profitable but probably with smaller margins that the rest of its jewelry business.?

The NFL trophy is made in a workshop nestled into a distribution center in Parsippany, New Jersey.

"It's like the turn of the century with some of the machines and equipment used," O'Rourke noted.

As you might imagine, the size of the silver sheets is much larger than the average piece used for Tiffany jewelry. Actually, the only place the company has been able to procure sheets of high-grade silver big enough for the Vince Lombardi Trophy is in Italy.

After the silver arrives in New Jersey, the four-month process begins. Old-world terms like blacksmithing, spinning and chasing are following by the final polishes and engravings.

"It's made by local craftspeople that are employing crafts and skills from the 1800s," O'Rourke explained.

Then, the trophy goes to the Hall of Fame for display and returns for a touchup before journeying to the big game itself.

"It does come in a blue box," O'Rourke joked. "Actually, the reality is that the trophy will be in blue felt in a secure box ? not a traditional Tiffany box."

After the game, the winning team enjoys the trophy for a while before returning it to Tiffany for a cleaning and a final engraving.

Sometimes, it's a little worse for wear.

"The biggest issue is always the champagne," O'Rourke said.

The biggest party offender??Reportedly, the New Orleans Saints after winning in 2010.

Appeals court rules Obama's NLRB appointments were illegal ...

In a decision that could invalidate more than a year?s worth of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) rulings, a federal appeals court on Jan. 25 said President Obama exceeded his constitutional authority when he made three recess appointments to the five-member board.

The problem, according to a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit: The Senate was not technically in recess on Jan. 4, 2012, when Obama named Sharon Block, Terence F. Flynn and Richard F. Griffin Jr. to the NLRB.

The Obama administration is likely to appeal the case?Noel Canning v. NLRB?to the U.S. Supreme Court, either this spring or, more likely, in the 2013-2014 session. Several other cases in various federal appeals circuits have also challenged the NLRB recess appointments.

Until the Supreme Court acts, NRLB rulings dating from January 2012 still stand. However, if the High Court upholds the D.C. Circuit?s decision, hundreds of rulings in which Block, Flynn and Griffin participated would be thrown out.

The NLRB has been unusually active in the last year, issuing important rulings on:

All could be invalidated. However, NLRB Chair Mark Gaston Pearce said in a statement that the board would continue to meet, hear cases and issue rulings pending completion of the litigation. The board currently has three members?Pearce, Block and Griffin?enough to legally conduct its business.

Senate Republicans had blocked confirmation of Obama?s NLRB appointments in late 2011, leaving the board with just two members, too few to take any official action. But in January 2012, the Senate stopped legislating during a 20-day ?holiday,? although it did not formally adjourn. Instead, Republicans held five-minute pro forma sessions every three days.

Obama moved to fill the NLRB anyway, citing the Constitution?s recess appointments clause, which allows presidents to bypass confirmation proceedings when the Senate is in recess and unable to provide its ?advice and consent? on presidential appointments.

The appeals court panel ruled that Obama lacked the authority to decide what constitutes a recess. It said recess appointments can only occur when the Senate is in formal recess between sessions, not when it is just taking a break. Presidents have used recess appointments to fill government vacancies hundreds of times in United States history, usually after Congress has bottled up nominations.

Applegate wins Newbery; Klassen takes Caldecott

(AP) ? Katherine Applegate's "The One and Only Ivan" won the John Newbery Medal for the outstanding book of 2012, while Jon Klassen's "This Is Not My Hat" received the Randolph Caldecott Medal for outstanding illustration, the American Library Association announced Monday.

The Newbery and Caldecott awards are the top honors for children's literature.

Applegate's book tells of a daydreaming gorilla and the life lessons he receives through his friendship with a baby elephant. It was inspired by a real gorilla, one who lived decades without meeting another of his kind before spending his final, happy years at an Atlanta zoo.

Klassen was the author and illustrator of "This Is Not My Hat," his picture story about a fish and his blue hat, and the successor to Klassen's popular "I Want My Hat Back."

Bryan Collier's illustration for a book edition of Langston Hughes' poem "I, Too, Am America" received a Coretta Scott King prize for outstanding work by an African-American. Andrea Davis Pinkney's "Hand in Hand" won the King award for best text.

Alire Saenz's "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" won twice: the Stonewall Book Award, for works about the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender experience, and the Pura Belpre Award for best Latino/Latina author. David Diaz's work on "Martin de Porres: The Rose in the Desert" won the Belpre for illustration.

Katherine Paterson, 80 years old and winner of the Newbery, the National Book Award and many other honors, received the Laura Ingalls Wilder prize for lifetime achievement.

Steve Sheinkin's "Bomb: The Race to Build ? and Steal ? the World's Most Dangerous Weapon" was named the best nonfiction book and the "most distinguished informational" book.

Spain's 'doping doctor' in court

A Spanish doctor has appeared in court accused of running one of the world's largest sports doping rings.

Dr Eufemiano Fuentes's trial in Madrid comes nearly seven years after police raided his offices and seized some 200 bags of blood which were linked to a number of top cyclists.

Dozens of cyclists have been called to testify as witnesses in the trial.

Dr Fuentes, his sister and three former cycling coaches are charged with breaking public health laws.

They could not be charged with doping-related crimes because Spain had no anti-doping law at the time of their arrest.

Prosecutors must prove that the defendants' actions put the lives of the athletes at risk - something the defence is expected to deny.

Monday saw only opening legal arguments. Dr Fuentes's testimony was postponed until Tuesday morning.

Analysis

The great international interest in this trial is linked to the claim by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that it was told, back in 2006, that the blood bags seized were from athletes from "several sports".

However that claim will not be the focus of this trial, which is expected to look only on cycling.

A suspicion - that some evidence seized during the raids has been held back - will therefore persist.

However, Spain's anti-doping agency says it has seen no evidence to back up that suspicion.

The BBC has spoken to a Spanish long-distance runner who claimed that he was encouraged to dope via Dr Fuentes's alleged network.

I asked Dr Fuentes's lawyer, Julian Perez, if the doctor had clients who were not cyclists. "I do not know", was his response.

The case comes days after former seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong admitted to using banned drugs and blood doping during his cycling career.

Code-names

Spanish police carried out a series of raids on offices, laboratories and flats in Madrid, Zaragoza and El Escorial in May 2006 as part of an investigation known as Operation Puerto.

They found about 200 bags of blood or frozen plasma with labels that were believed to be code-names for Dr Fuentes's clients - athletes who were allegedly benefiting from a highly-sophisticated doping programme.

Dozens of cyclists were allegedly implicated in the scandal, including former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, who is expected to give evidence in the trial.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has said that it was told, at the time of the raids, that the bags of blood also related to athletes from several sports, including football and tennis.

But the trial will focus only on cyclists who, according to the chief prosecutor in the case, are the only athletes that could be identified from the bags of blood seized.

The trial is expected to last until mid-March.

If found guilty, the defendants could face up to two years in prison and a two-year professional ban.

Have You Seen the Clever Online R?sum? Created to Look Like an ...

In tough economic times and in an increasingly competitive job market, having a r?sum??that stands out among the rest is of the utmost importance. If ?Legally Blonde? taught us anything it?s that a pink, scented r?sum??at least gets noticed. A French Web product manager has taken his r?sum??to the next level and the Internet is loving it.

Here?s a screenshot to give you a brief look at why the online r?sum??is going viral, but be sure to check out Philippe Dubost?s full page here.

Philippe Dubosts Online R?sum? Modeled After Amazon Product Page Goes Viral

(Image: PhilDub.com screenshot)

If you haven?t noticed the similarities, Dubost?s r?sum??(www.phildub.com) is modeled after an Amazon product page. Hence, it?s play-on-words page title ?An Amaz-ing Resume.?

Dubost in his self sale describes his skills as being both in technical and management fields with five years in Web product development. He has an ?entrepreneurial mindset? and is a ?strong generalist? who speaks three languages (English, French and Spanish). The marathon runner whose fastest time was 3 hours 22 minutes received his undergrad and masters in management in France and an MBA from the University of Dayton in Ohio.

Here?s more from Dubost?s ?product description?:

For the past 6 years I?ve put my energy towards growing and enhancing meaningful web products and services.
I then went one step further when I created my own web company 2 years ago. What motivated me was the perspective of applying the different sets of professional & technical skills I had learnt so far to build a meaningful web product. APPARTINFO.com is the first local reviews guide on apartments and neighborhoods in France, and it has been a very rewarding adventure so far.
I enjoy traveling and working in multicultural environments, as I have in the past in the US, Mexico and France.

Dubost?s references are included in the star rating section. Naturally, he has received a majority of five star ratings but there are enough one star ratings to raise a few eyebrows. Dubost explained joking on Twitter that this must be ex-girlfriends.

On Twitter, Dubost sheds more light on the creation of his viral r?sum?. It only took him about two days to complete and he continues to add some new information occasionally. The Independent in the U.K. caught up with Dubost for more details about why he chose an unconventional tactic to market himself:

He said he opted for the Amazon page because he was a ?pathological Amazon addict?, and ?I wanted to do something fun. R?sum?s are not fun. They?re not fun to write, not fun to read.? He added: ?I thought it would be fun to build a small web product that would feel a little bit like a game you could interact with, like those baby toys where every button you push makes a different noise.?

For those looking to hire Dubost, they?re in luck. He ?ships? anywhere in the world. So, has Dubost received any nibbles from interested employers? The Independent reported Dubost saying he received at least 100 emails from potential employers.

?So many awesome companies, projects, entrepreneurs, I?m starting to feel like a spoilt kid with too many toys,? Dubost told the Independent. ?And yes, among those, there are indeed a few opportunities that match what I?m looking for and that I?m going to pursue.?

Feeling flirty? Wait for the sun to shine

Jan. 28, 2013 ? We all know how casual flirtation can lift one's mood, which can be important at this time of year when the winter blues are at their peak. But if you are more serious about your flirting and hope to get that all important phone number, you're better off waiting until it's sunny, according to new French research published in the journal Social Influence.

Nicolas Gu?guen of the University of South Brittany -- who has previously investigated how wearing red lipstick can increase a waitress' tips -- conducted a study in which an 'attractive' 20 year old male approached 18-25 year old women walking alone in the street and asked them for their phone numbers. The women were solicited on both sunny and cloudy (but not rainy) days, when the temperature was about the same.

In the past other environmental factors have been found to make people more likely to flirt or exchange phone numbers -- the presence of pleasant smells, romantic music or certain colours have all been found to have an effect.

Previous research has also shown how the weather can affect certain social behaviours -- sunshine makes people more likely to help strangers or answer a survey, and people tend to leave bigger tips in restaurants on sunny days. But this is the first research to explore how the weather may influence courtship or dating behaviour.

It was found that women were more receptive to being approached and flirted with -- and give out their phone numbers -- on sunny days: over a fifth -- 22.4% -- of women did so when the sun was out, as opposed to 13.9% on the cloudy days.

(The phone numbers were later used to contact the women and tell them the true nature of the study, as per the recommendation of the ethics committee of the lab which reviewed the project!)

The message seems clear: flirting is more likely to have a positive outcome on sunny days. But Professor Gu?guen was careful to include certain caveats regarding the applicability of the research to everyday situations: the sunshine (or other factors) may after all have improved the attractive 20 year old male's flirting skills on those days. Other atmospheric conditions such as windiness or humidity were not accounted for. And, perhaps most crucially, the research was conducted in France, where 'men traditionally approach women in romantic relationships'.

The journal article concludes with suggestions for further study in this area -- for instance, are men themselves more likely to initiate flirting behaviour when the sun is shining? We'll have to wait until the Spring to find out!

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German regulator BaFin has launched a special probe against four lenders including Deutsche Bank as part of an investigation into possible manipulation of the Europe Interbank Offered Rate (Euribor), the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported on Monday.

A special probe is the most severe kind of investigation the regulator can launch against a bank.

The German regulator is also investigating Portigon AG , Sueddeutsche Zeitung said, without citing sources. Portigon is what remains following the breakup of the bank that used to be known as WestLB.

Officials at Deutsche Bank and BaFin were not available for comment. Portigon officials were also not available for comment.

The special probes were launched after BaFin had asked for information from all German banks involved in setting Euribor rates, Sueddeutsche said.

Euribor and its larger counterpart, Libor, or the London Interbank Offered Rate, are Europe's key gauges of how much banks pay to borrow from their peers and are used to set the prices of swathes of financial products, from Spanish home mortgages to more complex derivatives.

Deutsche Bank is already being subjected to a BaFin special probe in connection with Libor.

Deutsche Bank has said it is cooperating with investigations in the United States and Europe in connection with setting rates between 2005 and 2011.

In July, Reuters reported that several banks under investigation for suspected rigging of Euribor intensified cooperation with EU antitrust regulators in the hope of lower fines.

Earlier this month German bank BayernLB said it has withdrawn from the Euribor panel, effective at the start of 2013, citing "strategic reasons".

More than 40 banks still contribute to the Euribor inter-bank lending rate, but the Euribor-EBF group running it warned recently that more could leave following recent bad publicity.

The daily Libor poll asks banks at what rate they think they will be able to borrow money from each other in 10 major currencies and for 15 borrowing periods ranging from overnight loans to 12 months.

As the credit crisis intensified between 2006 and 2008, allegations started mounting that Libor no longer reflected the real cost banks were paying for funds. Authorities have been examining whether traders tried to influence the rate to profit on bets on the direction it would go.

UFC On FOX 6 Results: Rampage Jackson Falls To Glover Teixeira (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

CHICAGO -- In possibly Rampage Jackson's last UFC fight, the former champion was visibly exhausted.

It also was easy to see that Glover Teixeira was well on his way to a unanimous decision Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at the United Center.

Jackson, the 34-year-old former light heavyweight champion was taken down in all three rounds, but Teixeira (20-2) couldn't finish him. Jackson (32-11) got back to his feet every time. Late in the second round, Jackson tried to shrug off Teixeira's punches, but fatigue appeared to be setting in.

"I really wanted to win that fight," Jackson said. "I kind of wish I fought smart and didn't get hit so much, but I always said I would rather lose a good fight than win a boring one and the fans are telling me that was an exciting fight. So I guess I'm sad but not so sad. I fought like Rampage tonight."

The fight was scored 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Jackson, who fought his last fight under his current UFC contract, has been critical of the UFC and how he perceives the organization treats its fighters. He insists the fight was his last in the UFC, but plans on continuing his MMA career.

"He just walked out right now and screamed, `You are going to miss me,'" White said. "I said, `I miss you already buddy.' ... Rampage's biggest problem is that he doesn't always train. He doesn't always stay in shape. If he took this sport 100 percent, hardcore, serious, God knows what that guy would be able to accomplish, but he doesn't."

Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title in the main event, unanimously outpointing John Dodson.

Dodson, fighting at 125 pounds, landed left hands twice in the second round, sending Johnson to the ground. In the third round, Johnson had a takedown and landed a knee to get back in the fight. Johnson was warned after two illegal knees, a low blow in the first round and an illegal knee in the fourth round.

Johnson (17-2-1) started taking control late in fourth land, landing a series of knees to Dodson's head and a series of punches as Dodson (15-6) tired. It continued in the fifth and final round, as Dodson couldn't defend repeated knees to his head.

Johnson struggled in the first two rounds.

"I got dazed a little bit, but I am in good shape," Johnson said. "It is going to happen. You are going to get hit."

In a lightweight bout, Anthony Pettis (14-2) landed a left kick to Donald Cerrone's body and followed with a left jab in the second round, knocking Cerrone (19-5) to the ground and winning his third straight fight.

"Shutting that guy up was the biggest thing for me," Pettis said. "Now I never need to hear about that guy again. He's done. He got beat in one round. Goodbye."

Pettis put himself in a position for the lightweight UFC title and asked the question to UFC President Dana White.

"I am not scared to fight anybody. I want the champ ASAP," Pettis said. "Dana White what do I have to do for this title fight?"

Pettis came off an 11-month layoff after shoulder surgery.

In another main card fight, 30-year-old Chicago native Ricardo Lamas (13-2) dropped a series of elbows and punches on 24-year-old Erik Koch (13-2) before the featherweight bout was stopped by referee John McCarthy. Lamas had Koch pinned to the ground and went to work on Koch's bloodied face.

(AP) ? Dr. Phil McGraw has booked the first on-camera interview with the man who allegedly concocted the girlfriend hoax that ensnared Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o.

A "Dr. Phil Show" spokesperson confirmed on Friday the interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo (roh-NY-ah too-ee-AH'-so-SO'-poh), the man accused of creating an online persona of a nonexistent woman who Te'o said he fell for without ever meeting face-to-face.

The ruse was uncovered last week by Deadspin.com, which reported that Tuiasosopo created the woman, named Lennay Kekua, who then supposedly died last September.

No further details of the "Dr. Phil" interview, including its airdate, were announced.

This interview follows the first on-camera interview with Te'o conducted this week by Katie Couric.

Woman sues Match.com: Match calls the $10M suit 'absurd'

Mary Kay Beckman, the woman suing Match.com for $10 million dollars, has no case, says Match.com. In her lawsuit, she alleges that her Match-arranged date tried to kill her.

Mary Kay Beckman filed suit in U.S. District Court on Friday, accusing Match.com of failing to disclose the dangers of online dating.

She said she'd known Wade Ridley only eight days when she broke up with him in September 2010. Four months later, he stabbed her 10 times. He later was charged with murdering a woman in Phoenix. He died in prison last year.

Match.com said in a statement Monday that Beckman's experience was horrible but the lawsuit is "absurd." It said Beckman was a victim of a "sick, twisted" man with no known criminal record.

Match.com, the world's leading online dating and relationship company for over 15 years, markets itself as having gained "insight" into relationships from its millions of successful matches.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama announced Friday that his new chief of staff is longtime trusted aide Denis McDonough, whom the president described as a close friend unafraid to deliver straight talk.

McDonough has been a longtime foreign policy adviser to the president and is popular among the White House staff. Obama made the announcement in the East Room of the White House with McDonough and outgoing chief of staff Jack Lew, who has been nominated as Treasury Secretary, at his side.

"I know you'll always give it to me straight, as only a friend can, telling me not only what I want to hear, but more importantly, what I need to hear to make the best possible decisions on behalf of the American people," Obama told McDonough.

Obama said McDonough has played a key role in every one of the major national security decisions of his presidency, including the end of the war in Iraq, winding down the war in Afghanistan, responses to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan and repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members.

McDonough's place in Obama's inner circle was illustrated during the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011. He is among those whose images are captured in a White House photograph seated in the situation room with Obama and other senior officials watching the raid unfold.

Obama complimented McDonough for being so humble, visiting troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center without fanfare or cameras to learn about the needs of the troops. "Then he comes back here to the White House, and he gets it done. And that's the kind of focus, but also the kind of heart, that I want in this White House," Obama said.

He said McDonough also is tough, having been raised in Minnesota as one of 11 children. And he teased that the father of three and former St. John's University football player "made up for modest talents with extraordinary dedication and a high threshold for pain."

Earlier, McDonough worked as a foreign policy specialist in Congress, including as a senior foreign policy adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., before moving to Obama's Senate office. Obama joked that McDonough showed him where the Senate restrooms were and how to pass a bill.

McDonough's new role was previously filled by Rahm Emanuel, William Daly and Pete Rouse, as interim chief of staff, before Lew.

Obama also bid goodbye to top aide David Plouffe, his 2008 campaign manager, who was leaving the White House Friday. "If it were not for him, we would not have been as effective a White House, and I probably wouldn't be here," Obama said.

Other senior personnel shifts were made Friday, including the appointment of Obama chief congressional lobbyist Rob Nabors as McDonough's deputy for policy. Vice President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Tony Blinken, is taking over McDonough's post as deputy national security advisor.

Katy Kale is being promoted from to assistant to the president for management and administration after serving as the deputy for that post. Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco, head of the Justice Department's National Security Division, was selected to take over for John Brennan as advisor for homeland security and counterterrorism once his nomination as head of the Central Intelligence Agency is confirmed.

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer is being promoted to senior advisor. Pfeiffer deputy Jennifer Palmieri will take over as communications director.

Miguel Rodriguez is being named to take over the top lobbying post after serving under Nabors, and Obama campaign staffer David Simas is being named a deputy senior advisor for communications and strategy.

The White House announced Friday that Chris Lu, an aide who has been with Obama since his time as a senator and most recently managed relations with his Cabinet, was leaving his post. The job will be taken over by Danielle Gray, formerly deputy director of the National Economic Council. In a statement, Obama praised Lu for overseeing "one of the most stable and effective Cabinets in history" and said he's asked him to consider taking on another administration job after he takes some time off.

Stocks drop on weak Apple sales

Stocks fell on Wall Street Thursday?after the tech giant Apple warned of weaker sales.?Airline stocks were mostly higher, despite rising fuel costs.

Apple sank $63.50 to $430.50. With iPhone sales hitting a plateau and no new products to introduce, Apple said sales would likely increase just 7 percent in the current quarter. That's a let-down for a company that has regularly posted growth rates above 50 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 0.01 of a point to 1,494.82. Earlier in the day, the S&P 500 crossed above 1,500 for the first time since December 2007.

The broad gauge of the?stock?market has already gained 4.8 percent this year and climbed seven days in a row.

One reason for the market's recent rise is that some of the biggest obstacles have been pushed aside, said Brian Gendreau, a market strategist at Cetera Financial Group. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives agreed to suspend the federal government's borrowing limit until May 19, allowing the U.S. to keep paying its bills for another four months.

"Politics is off the table for now and Europe seems like it's stable. So what's left? It's earnings. And aside from Apple it seems like pretty good news," Gendreau said.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 46 points to close at 13,825.33. The Nasdaq fell 23.29 points to 3,130.38. The 12 percent drop in Apple, which makes up 10 percent of the index, was enough to pull the Nasdaq lower.

Even after its recent slump, Apple still ranks as the world's most valuable company at $423 billion, putting it $7 billion ahead of the runner up, Exxon Mobil.

Heading into this earnings season, many investors wondered whether shrinking sales would start to squeeze Corporate America's profits. Judging by the results so far, few are struggling.

Of the 134 big companies in the S&P 500 that reported through Thursday morning, 85 have beaten Wall Street's estimates, according to S&P Capital IQ.

Microsoft fell in after-hours trading after reporting that its earnings slipped 4 percent in the last quarter of 2012. Starbucks, which also reported results after the closing bell, was little changed as its revenue came in slightly below forecasts.

Netflix jumped $43.60 to $146.86, a 42 percent bounce. Analysts had expected rising costs to lead the movie and TV show distributor to post a loss in the last three months of 2012. But Netflix said late Wednesday that it turned a profit with the help of 2 million new subscribers.

The Labor Department reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment aid fell last week to the lowest since January 2008. Applications dropped 5,000 to 330,000. The four-week average also hit a five-year low.

The employment report nudged prices for U.S. government bonds down, sending their yields higher. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note inched up to 1.85 percent from 1.83 percent late Wednesday.

Airline?stocks?were mostly higher. Despite rising fuel costs, Southwest reported better earnings than analysts had expected, thanks partially to the airline charging $8 more for the average fare. The parent company of United Airlines and Continental took a heavy quarterly loss but announced plans to cut around 600 jobs.

Southwest Airlines rose 9 cents to $11.45. United Continental Holdings gained 54 cents to $25.54.

Among other companies reporting earnings:

? Xerox rose 17 cents to $7.75. Xerox's net income shrunk over the same period the previous year but it still beat analysts' estimates by a penny, helped by better revenue from its business services.

? Union Pacific dropped $1.51 to $133.84. The country's largest railroad company posted weaker revenue than analysts had predicted, a result of falling coal and crop shipments.

UK's Osborne says to stick to deficit reduction plan

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - British Chancellor George Osborne knocked back suggestions on Thursday from the International Monetary Fund's chief economist that he should consider slowing his deficit reduction plan.

"I have been prepared to let the automatic stabilisers operate in the UK but I don't think it is right to abandon a credible deficit plan," Osborne said at an event in Davos, Switzerland hosted by broadcaster CNBC.

"That credibility is very hard won and easily lost and I think it would be a huge mistake to put that at risk."

Osborne also said he would make the case in a future referendum for Britain to remain in the European Union if it reformed.

"I'm arguing for reform in Europe and Britain being part of a reformed Europe. You can't ignore the growing gap between the governed and those who claim to govern," he said.

Caloric restriction has a protective effect on chromosomes

Jan. 23, 2013 ? One of the indicators of a cell's health is the state of its DNA and containers -- the chromosomes -- so when these fuse together or suffer anomalies, they can become the source of illnesses like cancer and/or aging processes.

According to a study carried out by a team led by Mar?a Blasco, the director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and head of the Telomeres and Telomerase Group, a sustained lowering of food intake over time results in an increase of telomere length -- the ends of chromosomes -- in adult mice, which has a protective effect on the DNA and genetic material.

These beneficial effects on the youth of the chromosomes translate to a lower incidence of cancer and other age-related illnesses. The journal PLOS ONE is to publish the details of this study in its online edition this week.

A lower incidence of cancer and better health

To carry out the study, researchers used young mice -- just three months old -- and reduced their caloric intake by 40% before observing them until the end of their life cycle.

"We see that mice that undergo caloric restriction show a lower telomere shortening rate than those fed with a normal diet," says Blasco. "These mice therefore have longer telomeres as adults, as well as lower rates of chromosome anomalies," she adds.

To study the effects of this phenomenon on the health of the mammals, researchers observed the incidence of age-related illnesses like cancer. The mice that had been fed a lower calorie intake showed a reduction in the incidence of cancer. Furthermore, these mice also showed a lower incidence of other age-related illnesses such as osteoporosis, greater glucose uptake or improvements in motor coordination.

When the researchers carried out these same experiments with a variety of mice that produce more telomerase -- a protein that lengthens telomeres and protects chromosomes -- they observed that these mice not only enjoyed better health but also lived up to 20% longer.

"We believe that such a significant increase in longevity is due to the protective effect against cancer produced by caloric restriction -- incidents fall by 40% if we compare them with the mice that produce more telomerase and have a normal diet -- and, added to the presence of longer telomeres, this makes the mice live longer and better," says Blasco.

Despite the effects of caloric restriction depending on the genetic characteristics of each organism, this study opens the way to studying the effect other factors and lifestyle habits, such as smoking or exercise, might have on aging.

Furthermore, it is calculated that there are currently more than 10,000 people in the world on some form of controlled caloric restriction, so the observation of these individuals will be decisive in discovering the effects of this type of diet on humans.
