Tiger Woods makes run at 59 at Bridgestone

AKRON, Ohio (AP) ? Tiger Woods had a shot at making history with a magical 59.

He swore he wasn't disappointed to come up short.

"Disappointed? Absolutely not," he said.

Then he cracked, "A 61's pretty good. I'm not bummed."

Like a pitcher having to settle for a shutout instead of a perfect game, Woods could console himself by tying his career best and building a seven-shot lead Friday through 36 holes at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Pursuing his eighth victory at Firestone Country Club, Woods opened birdie-eagle ? stuffing an approach to 3 feet at the first hole and holing a 20-footer for 3 at the par-5 second. He had two more birdies on the front nine, and had four in a row to start the back nine in a light rain.

Needing to go only 2 under over his last five holes, he missed birdie putts inside 10 feet at 15 and 17. He saved par on the last with a 25-footer after an errant drive and a shot that hit into the trees and ended up in a bare spot short and right of the green.

"How about just pleased?" he said, when asked to rate the round. "I'm very happy I was able to post that. I just kept thinking, whatever lead I had, 'Let's just keep increasing it.' It's at seven now, I believe. So that's not too bad after two days."

The 61 ? matching his career best at the 1999 Byron Nelson, 2005 Buick Open and on the same Firestone course back in 2000 ? left him at 13-under 127.

Defending champion Keegan Bradley and Chris Wood, playing the tournament for the first time, were tied for second. They each shot 68.

Bradley finished well before Woods, but was asked if it was disheartening to take the lead and then have Woods retake it after the opening two holes.

"Tiger, those first couple holes out there are definitely birdie holes, so I'd expect him to do that," Bradley said. "You know, I hope he doesn't go too low."

Sorry, Keegan.

Woods, a four-time winner this year, needed only 22 putts, eight fewer than he had Thursday in an opening 66. He hit 10 of 14 fairways and was on in regulation on 16 of 18 greens.

The next best score on a threatening day with a slate-gray sky and precipitation was a 66.

It seemed every fan on the course took notice as Woods started stacking up birdies. The magic number 59 ? shot five times on the PGA Tour ? dominated conversations.

"Oh, they were excited," Woods said. "You could hear it more than feel it. You definitely could hear it. They were into it."

Asked if that kind of electricity helps out a player, he joked, "It's nice to be playing in front of people who are excited like that, especially people who aren't yelling just because your ball gets in the air. You know, we are pros."

How good were things going for him? He yanked a drive into the trees at 13, but it ricocheted into the middle of the fairway. From there he hit an iron to 15 feet and drilled the putt.

At the 14th, Woods hit his drive on the other side of the cart path beneath a canopy of huge trees to the right. He was forced to hit a low, hard, slicing shot to the green that ran to the back fringe. From there, he chipped 10 feet past but rolled in the par putt.

The gallery seemed to swell with each hole, the crowds growing in hopes of seeing history.

He stepped off his shot into the 216-yard, par-3 15th because he was bothered by a bug, then hit an iron 10 feet short of the pin. After playing partner Hideki Matsuyama of Japan putted out, Woods missed his birdie putt on the right side.

The 667-yard 16th, dubbed "The Monster" by Arnold Palmer, resulted in another par. Woods hit a long drive that dribbled into the first cut of rough on the left side of the fairway, then laid up to about 100 yards. His wedge carried too far, however, spinning back to 30 feet. With a light sprinkle turning into a steady drizzle, he two-putted, leaving the birdie attempt short and right of the hole by 2 feet.

A huge throng, several deep around the lengthy hole, responded with polite applause as he tapped in.

He still had a chance for a 59. He hit a long drive along the left side at 17, but misread a 7-footer for birdie that missed on the low side of the break.

"I had opportunities to make putts there at 15 and 17," he said.

With the rain now falling hard, and Woods needing to hole his second shot on the par-4 18th for a 59, he drove far to the right on the slight dogleg to the left. He muscled a shot out of a difficult lie to a bare spot near a huge scoreboard right and short of the green. From there, he chipped to the back fringe ? and made the 25-footer coming back for par.

He pumped his fist as the crowd roared.

Matsuyama, a 21-year-old who was sixth at the British Open, got a close-up view.

"It was great looking at great play at the top of the world," he said.

The last player to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event was Stuart Appleby in the final round of the Greenbrier Classic in 2010. Al Geiberger was the first in 1977, and Chip Beck, David Duval and Paul Goydos also accomplished the feat.

Bill Haas shot a 68 and was tied for fourth at 5 under with Henrik Stenson, who had a 70. Jim Furyk, Luke Donald, Jason Duffner and Bubba Watson were 4 under.

There have been 27 rounds of 60 in tour events, including Phil Mickelson this year in the Phoenix Open.

In a remarkable career spent in the spotlight, a 59 would have been just another check mark on Woods' to-do list. Instead, he didn't think it was even anything special.

"(One of my) top 10 rounds?" he said, repeating the question. "I don't know about that."

US: Mideast deal in 9 months target, not deadline

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A U.S. diplomat in Jerusalem says reaching an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal within nine months is a target, not a deadline.

Consul-General Michael Ratney told reporters that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to visit the region "on a regular basis" to check on progress. He says John Allen, a retired U.S. general, will work closely with the two sides on security arrangements.

Talks resumed this week after a five-year freeze. Kerry has said he envisions a deal within nine months.

In two decades of intermittent negotiations, such timelines have been ineffective in prodding negotiators.

Ratney said Wednesday the U.S. believes the sides can "achieve something in nine months" if they work hard. He added, "We never set a deadline, but we have clearly set a target."

Bradley Manning's Heart in Right Place, but He Still Erred

Yahoo asked military service members, veterans and others to react to Bradley Manning's acquittal on charges that he aided the enemy when he leaked classified government documents. Manning, a former U.S. Army soldier arrested in 2010, was found guilty of lesser charges on Tuesday. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | I am not sure I agree with the espionage verdict, but I am not surprised at the acquittal. Is Bradley Manning guilty on some of the other charges? I would say yes, indeed. I do agree with the guilty verdicts on computer fraud, and theft, as these were unquestionably committed for the exposal.

Still, it is not as if he was selling design plans for nuclear submarines to North Korea. His defense was that he was just trying to be a whistleblower in opening the public's eyes to our wartime procedures.

I understand Pfc. Manning's desire to make Americans aware of faulty ethics in the country's foreign policy. I am not saying I would have reacted in the manner he did had I disagreed with information I was privy to. Was his illegal publishing of material to Wikileaks the correct way to blow that whistle? Probably not.

But action needs to be taken and not swept under the rug. Sooner or later, the government is going to have to realize it cannot get away with everything. This nation's citizens deserve the right to know how its government is conducting its business.

We will continue to see more like Manning and Edward Snowden, as they are witness to absurdities in this government. And, when they unveil the truth, the government will have no choice but to attempt to throw them to the dogs and scream, "Spy!" Both sides should realize there are consequences to what they do.

As a soldier, I took an oath to protect American citizens from all enemies, foreign and domestic. I have been a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army for seven years. One thing I have learned is tact. I have also learned that I will not always be happy with what I am charged to do. I will follow those orders that are legally and morally sound. Pfc. Manning chose a different path that, for him, led him to those dogs.

Michael Hedges enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2002. He served in the infantry from 2002 to 2010, when he was medically re-classed to Army Finance due to combat-related injuries. He served two tours of duty in Iraq in infantry and one tour in Afghanistan in Army Finance.

TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION: Shocking photos show NYC hotel room Amanda Bynes trashed before ?cabbing? it to California, where she remains in psychiatric hold

Piles of of garbage, ashes, cosmetics, and even a destroyed smoke alarm can be seen in the photos taken inside Amanda Bynes' hotel room.

TMZ.com

Piles of of garbage, ashes, cosmetics and even a destroyed smoke alarm can be seen in the photos taken inside Amanda Bynes' hotel room.

Days before Amanda Bynes landed in enforced psychiatric hold in Los Angeles, the "Easy A" actress trashed a room in New York City's Ritz-Carlton hotel.

The 27-year-old former child star, who was last spotted in New York on July 17, left mounds of garbage in her wake, scattering ashes, cosmetic products, empty soda bottles and other detritus around the room.

According to TMZ, Bynes was kicked out of the hotel for smoking marijuana and ran up a $9,000 bill during a nine-day stay in the swanky digs.

The pictures show a destroyed smoke alarm hanging from the ceiling. The damaged alarm is consistent with claims that Bynes' parents, Rick and Lynn Bynes, made?in a filing seeking temporary conservatorship of their daughter, who they believe has run off the rails and requires immediate help.

PHOTOS: CHILD STAR MELTDOWNS

According to her parents, Bynes had become "extremely paranoid" about being watched. She would cover smoke alarms with towels, tape windows shut, and cover her car's dashboard with cardboard and tape due to fears "cameras were watching her."

Bynes' parents claim that they have no idea how their daughter got from Southern California from New York, as she has no formal identification. According to the filing, Bynes told them she "cabbed it."?

RELATED: AMANDA BYNES' MOM FILES FOR TEMPORARY CONSERVATORSHIP

"We believe she is essentially homeless," the filing states.

The request came after Bynes was forcibly hospitalized to examine her mental state after an incident in which Bynes began a fire in a driveway around the block from her parents' house.

PHOTOS: CELEBRITIES WHO'VE FELT THE WRATH OF AMANDA BYNES

Bynes and her parents had been estranged in recent months, but they filed for conservatorship over concerns that "Amanda poses a substantial risk to herself to others and to property based on recent events in her life."

Bynes has also apparently blown through $1.2 million of her $4 million in savings in a "very short amount of time."

RELATED: ASHLEY BENSON MOCKS TROUBLED AMANDA BYNES

Doctors plan to hold Amanda for two more weeks in a psychiatric ward to further evaluate her. A California judge will rule on her mother's request for conservatorship after speaking with Bynes when she is released from hospitalization.?

The actress is due to appear in court in Manhattan on Sept. 26.?

Bynes? downward spiral began with a DUI arrest in Hollywood in 2012. Since then, her increasingly bizarre behavior has nabbed headlines and sparked rampant speculation about the state of her mental health.

Asbestos Blog What exactly is Muga Fencing?

Written by frank k. soliman

The recognition of sports as a form a recreation has resulted towards the flourish of sports facilities around the globe. Sports facilities provide a is completely safe spot for individuals to embark on different types of sports. Before, these kinds of facilities catered just to one type of activity like basketball for basketball courts, tennis for tennis courts and so forth. Today, engineering advancement has generated the Multi Use Game Area or MUGA that is fast-becoming popular.

How many jihadis just escaped from Abu Ghraib?

Sophisticated overnight attacks on two Iraqi prisons on the outskirts of Baghdad involving mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, and dozens of attackers are a sign of growing potency for the country's Sunni insurgents.

These weren't attacks on mosques or markets, designed to spread terror by killing unprepared civilians in public spaces. These were attacks on the militarized prisons of Abu Ghraib and Taji, both of which have large contingents of insurgents among their inmates and have long been targets for Iraq's jihadis. Yet the government of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was forced to scramble attack helicopters and rush troops to join pitched battles. Even so, they may not have staved off a stunning symbolic defeat.

Though early today government officials claimed the attackers had been kept from their ultimate objective ? freeing jihadi comrades ? as the day wore on scattered claims were made of a stunning insurgent success. Member of Parliament Hakim al-Zamili asserted to Reuters that 500 insurgents escaped from Abu Ghraib alone and that most of them were members of the Al Qaeda-aligned Islamic State in Iraq.

RECOMMENDED: Sunni and Shiite Islam: Do you know the difference? Take our quiz.

Iraq's al-Summaria TV also reported that hundreds of Al Qaeda fighters escaped from Abu Ghraib and Taji, citing an unnamed police source, and went on to say that many of them were from Saladin Province, which lies between the insurgent hotbed of Anbar and the increasingly troubled province of Mosul due to its border with Syria. But TV stations frequently get stories wrong when relying on unnamed sources. And Mr. Zamili, as a loyalist of Shiite preacher and Maliki opponent Muqtada al-Sadr, would have reasons to favor a story that embarrasses the prime minister.

Whether this was a total disaster or just the latest in a series of black eyes for the government remains to be seen, as is the death toll. Early reports claim that 20 soldiers and policemen died in the jailbreak and that roughly that many of the prisoners were killed. How many of the insurgent assault forces died has yet to be determined.

But what's already clear is light infantry attacks involving a large number of insurgents and weapons, that must have been long planned, were carried out against government forces on the outskirts of Baghdad, the seat of central government power. Iraq's sectarian civil war in some ways never really ended, US protestations that the "surge" brought peace to Iraq to the contrary. The Shiite dominated government has behaved autocratically, clamped down on freedom of speech, continued the tradition of torture in Iraq's prisons and police stations, and cut Sunni Arabs out of the political process.

Not surprisingly some of the Sunni Arabs who were promised a seat at the table in the "new Iraq" but have instead been systematically marginalized are taking up arms again. Lately they've been given heart by Sunni jihadi successes across the border in Syria (where Bashar al-Assad is allied with Shiite Iran and enjoys at least the tepid support of the Maliki government), with Iraqi jihadis from Anbar and other border provinces playing a prominent role in the Jabhat al-Nusra insurgent group, and those returning home reinvigorating their comrades.

AFP statistics show that 527 Iraqis died in insurgent violence this month through July 20 and there have been at least 100 further killed in the two days since, making July the deadliest month of the year ? and the deadliest month in Iraq since June 2008. The previous deadliest month in Iraq since June 2008 was this May.

While Sunni jihadis frequently execute prisoners and prey on defenseless civilians for either working with the government or simply being Shiites, an attack on Abu Ghraib carries powerful symbolism for Iraq's Sunni community in general.

The prison there was a house of horrors under Saddam Hussein, where political opponents (most Shiite but many Sunnis as well) were tortured before their execution. The disfigured body of a loved one returned to a community formed a powerful disincentive to standing in his way. After Hussein was deposed by US-led forces in 2003, Abu Ghraib's administration came into the hands of the US army, which in turn carried out torture on inmates, many of them Sunnis accused of being insurgents.

Pictures of the torture conducted by US guards leaked out and in 2004, and indelibly stained America's reputation in the country and much of the region. Abu Ghraib was long ago returned to Iraq's government, but succeeding Iraqi governments have made torture far more widespread and routine than it was when the US was running the country. While the worst abuses under Maliki's rule have taken place in secret prisons co-located with Iraqi army bases and Interior Ministry facilities, Abu Ghraib remains a symbol of central government abuse. And the ongoing torture fuels Iraq's separation and violence, rather than quelling it.

Iraq remains a long way from the worst of the civil war. The vast majority of Iraqis who lived through it don't want to return to that horror. But the war in Syria has seen Iraq's already limited control of that long border slip and government failures like that today ? which potentially saw hundreds of seasoned operatives re-injected into the Iraqi insurgency ? will encourage more Sunni fence-sitters to join the fight.

Zoe Saldana goes green for 'Guardians'

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? How many more colors can Zoe Saldana be on the big screen?

"Well, the rainbow has a lot of colors," Saldana said in an interview at Comic-Con, laughing. "I dig it. I like being in space. I get to play less girlfriends, more female parts, more women. So I find it meaty."

The actress portrays green-skinned alien Gamora in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" after going blue in James Cameron's "Avatar," a role she's expected to return to for sequels. And she recently reprised her other space-bound character, Uhura, in JJ Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness."

"It's a testament to how creative the people that conceive supernatural and science-fiction kind of stories," Saldana, 35, said of her love for the genre. "They're able to build something out of nothing by just imagining it. I have a huge fascination with that. Filmmakers like JJ, like ("Guardians" director) James (Gunn), like James Cameron. ... You need to be really, really special to do that. So I like being with special people."

Chris Pratt is among Saldana's co-stars in "Guardians," which had been filming for just a few weeks in the U.K. before its actors dropped in to show fans footage at Comic-Con.

Pratt plays Peter Quill, an interplanetary gunslinger known as Star-Lord who assembles a team of aliens to do battle. His character's wit and rebellious spirit has been compared to another planet-hopper, Han Solo.

"You can make the comparison, that's for sure," Pratt said, acknowledging that like "Star Wars," ''Guardians" ? set for release next summer ? is "a big space opera."

Saldana was more emphatic: "It's an awesome comparison. Are you kidding me? Harrison Ford!"

But Pratt, 34, said he has more pressing concerns as he returns to set.

"I just feel like, I'm hoping every day that they're not going to fire me," he said. "I'm like, 'So you saw dailies yesterday and I still have my job?' They say 'Yeah!' So for now I do."

Abbotsford school district considers thermal-energy proposal

The Abbotsford school district is considering a proposal from Fortis Alternative Energy Services (FAES) for geoexchange thermal energy systems at six local schools.

The proposal involves FAES installing, owning and operating the equipment, and retaining the services of district staff for maintenance and emergency response.

The alternative-energy system would be in place at Prince Charles and Terry Fox elementary schools; Howe, Eugene Reimer and Clayburn middle schools; and Rick Hansen Secondary.

The capital investment from FAES is an estimated $4 million. The district would have no up-front costs, but would pay a monthly rate ? not yet determined ? to FAES for 20 years, with an option to extend the agreement.

Ray Velestuk, secretary-treasurer of the Abbotsford school district, said the proposal is being considered as a means of further reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the district and saving an estimated $75,000 each year in energy costs.

?We have been a leader in this community in innovation in energy management, sustainability, on anything to do with the environment ?? (Considering the proposal) is a way to say we want to continue to be a leader; we want to reduce our carbon footprint.?

However, Velestuk said the plan is far from the approval stage.

The district first signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with FAES in May 2011, when the proposal involved most schools in the district and was estimated to cost $8 million in the first year, followed by $5 million in upgrades in subsequent years.

The MOU has since been extended twice ? now ending Nov. 11, 2013 ? to allow the district time to review the proposal and consider all possible outcomes.

FAES revised its proposal to take some of the district?s concerns into account, but Velestuk said there are still a number of issues to be worked out.

These include the final technical design, contract negotiations, and the implications of whatever decision the B.C. Utilities Commission eventually makes on whether thermal energy system utilities should be regulated.

?There are issues to be worked out that we might not be able to work out,? Velestuk said.

The Delta school district is currently the only one in the Lower Mainland to have already signed an agreement with FAES for thermal energy services. The project involves 19 buildings.

Industry opponents to these projects have expressed many concerns, including the potential regulation of ?discrete thermal energy projects,? saying such a decision would enable Fortis BC to ?corner the market,? thus impacting free enterprise and limiting customer choice.

Most Abbotsford schools currently run on a boiler system, with the exception of Abbotsford Senior Secondary, which installed a geoexchange system a year ago through funding assistance from BC Hydro and the Ministry of Education.

Tom Louie, the district?s director of facilities, said many of the current systems are aging and need replacing, but not all are suitable for thermal energy.

Geo-exchange heating and cooling is done through the use of ground pumps, which work by transferring underground heat and circulating it through a building.

A Mural of Dr. King Yelling at a College Graduate

Posted by Chris Davis on Mon, Jul 22, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Self-Tucker Architects have been giving the Greenlaw Community Center a nifty facelift. The new entry canopy is striking, and the landscaping is noticeably improved.

The murals are especially provocative, forcing viewers to ask hard questions like, why in the world is Dr. King yelling at a newly- minted graduate? And, more importantly, what do you think he might be saying?

US Department of Homeland Security - Science and Technology

Technology foraging at DHS

When the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is looking for a new technology to help fight terrorism, recover from a natural disaster, or support the nation's first responders, it turns to its Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). S&T then collaborates with its federal partners, as well as industry, and academia, and finds these solutions more efficiently and economically than ever before.

S&T's research managers do their homework; they canvas journals, patents, labs, and forums across the Web, looking for technologies that would be readily adaptable to enhance the homeland security mission. Experts call such quests technology foraginga hunt to discover what others are doing to solve the same types of problems, rather than "reinventing the wheel."

"When people think 'innovator,' they think 'Thomas Edison'a lab genius who created science breakthroughs," says Stephen Hancock, a former Navy aerospace engineering duty officer who leads the S&T tech foraging initiative. "But today we need innovators who can recognize a breakthrough, adapt it, package it, and then field it. It is the reinventing of invention itself. After all, we're not the only ones facing the same kind of challenges," says Hancock.

In 2011, technology foraging became a cornerstone of S&T's mission. Every technology development project must now include a foraging plan explaining how the team will strive to find and adapt a solution already achieved by a company, university, other agency, or other country.

Tech foraging calls for far more than an afternoon of surfing the Web. These S&T researchers, analysts, scientists and other specialists who research existing technology solutions are called foragers. "They're a special breed," says Hancock, "with a nose for opportunity and a knack for teaming." Every forager must know how to scan the marketplace of ideas, spot trends, forecast a technology's market demand, analyze alternatives, and shepherd a technology from lab to street. The Technology Foraging Office, managed by S&T's Research and Development Partnerships Office (RDP), brokers deals between S&T and all sectors of government, business, and research.

Technologies that are ready for DHS adaptation are found almost anywhere. For example, the U.S. Coast Guard asked S&T to find a way to track small, "dark" vesselsanonymous boats, rafts, or other watercraft that transport drugs or other illegal contraband. Small dark vessels operate in the vastness of the ocean and are difficult for the Coast Guard to discriminate from legitimate boat traffic. An S&T forager learned that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operated radar to monitor ocean current and wave action along the nation's coasts. Working with NOAA, S&T developed software that lets the Coast Guard sweep a bay with radar, then use NOAA's coastal-weather radar system to pick out and describe illegal, semi-submersible dark vessels.

Another good example of an S&T tech foraging success is a collaboration made with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory when S&T had been asked to look for disaster victim detection technologies. NASA had developed a technology that detects human heartbeats and began working with S&T to modify the technology for use in search and rescue operations. Together the interagency team found similar research was done in the 1990s at Michigan State under a grant from the National Science Foundation. S&T's First Responders Group and the NASA team used the results of the Michigan State research to verify technical assumptions and approaches, saving time, resources, and avoiding duplicate research. They also contacted the now retired Michigan State researcher, who was willing to help the team to improve the technology for victim detection. One year later, the S&T and NASA team now have an early prototype called Finding Individuals for Disaster and Emergency Response (FINDER). Field tested in June, FINDER is showing extremely promising test results in real world urban search and rescue training environments. In less than a minute, FINDER detected 3 heartbeats of people hidden in test rubble.

"These successful examples of tech foraging show how multiple investments from federal agencies can be leveraged, especially when program managers actively look for opportunities to re-purpose research and development, reducing costs and creating new homeland security solutions," says Hancock.

Technology foraging, like research and development, is about getting life-saving inventions out of one venuea university lab, an outdoor-adventure catalog, an army baseand into the hands of front line operators around the country.

Mexicans Trying To Take Back Mexico

Most stories about Mexico are bad around here. It's either immigration, guns, drugs or cartels as well as other stuff. So I figured some positive news is good for a change. Its cool to see them fighting back and trying to take Mexico back from the corrupt police, government and drug cartels.

Its mostly subtitles but worth the watch.

A question for everyone, should we be trying to arm these civilians (small arms) to try and cut down on the drug cartel members and help try to make Mexico a more stable country??
