Charities see influx of aid after Okla. tornado

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Donations are pouring into Oklahoma as people around the country look to help residents affected by last week's violent tornado outbreak, but charities also are receiving plenty of items they don't need ? tons of used clothes, shoes and stuffed animals that take up valuable warehouse space and clog distribution networks.

Charity organizers say monetary donations are far more flexible and useful, and many organizations are expected to see an infusion of cash donations after a benefit concert Wednesday night in Oklahoma City that featured country music stars with Oklahoma ties, including Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Vince Gill and Reba McEntire.

At the Abundant Life Church in Moore, just a few blocks from the Plaza Towers Elementary School where seven children died in the May 20 tornado, Sunday school classrooms are overflowing with donated clothes and other used items.

"I don't want to come across at all like we don't appreciate people's generosity, because we do," said Norma Clanton, a longtime church member who is helping coordinate volunteer efforts at the church. "To be honest, we've had very few people that have even come and looked at clothes.

"The people who have lost their homes, many of them aren't even in a permanent dwelling. They don't have room for a closet full of clothes or anything like that."

The American Red Cross says it's not equipped to handle a large influx of donations like household items ? which take time and money to sort, process and transport. Officials with major relief organizations encourage people to send money instead.

"We spend that money locally to help energize the local economy ... and it allows us to spend it on items we need," said Salvation Army spokeswoman Jennifer Dodd.

Organizations helping displaced residents are expected to see an influx of cash from the "Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert" at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in downtown Oklahoma City that was held Wednesday. The money goes directly to the United Way of Central Oklahoma, which will distribute funding agencies helping in relief and recovery efforts for those affected by the May 20 tornado, said Karla Bradshaw, a spokeswoman for the United Way of Central Oklahoma.

"Those are the ones that are dealing right now with the immediate needs," Bradshaw said.

People who lined up outside the arena in heavy rain before the telethon said they were happy to have an opportunity to help their neighbors and enjoy a night of country music.

"I told my husband I wanted to help, and what better way than to do something fun too," said 29-year-old Kara McCarthy of Oklahoma City, who attended the concert with a friend.

Shelton, a native of Ada, kicked off the concert with a version of his song "God Gave Me You."

The televised event also included recorded video pleas from Oklahoma native Garth Brooks and his wife, Trisha Yearwood, Moore native Toby Keith, Ellen Degeneres and Jay Leno.

"I'm here tonight with some of my closest friends from Oklahoma and beyond," Shelton told the sold-out crowd before the concert began. "It's going to be awesome. We're doing a TV show so we can raise as much money as humanly possible."

Donations have poured in to Oklahoma since two major tornadoes ripped through the state last week, killing 26 people and affecting nearly 4,000 homes, businesses and other buildings in five counties. Twenty-four people, including 10 children, were killed in the May 20 tornado that hit the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore.

In just the first three days after the tornado hit Moore, the Red Cross reported raising about $15 million in donations and pledges for its response to the Oklahoma tornados, including about $3.8 million in pledges from text donations.

The Salvation Army reported Tuesday afternoon it already has raised more than $5 million in monetary donations, as well as in-kind food donations from numerous corporations.

Before Wednesday night's concert, the United Way of Central Oklahoma reported raising $3 million for tornado relief, and the governor also asked the charity to administer an additional $2 million from a separate Oklahoma Strong disaster fund, said Debby Hampton, president and CEO of United Way of Central Oklahoma.

Dodd, with the Salvation Army, said many people are holding clothing drives to help benefit local residents, but that can pose problems for charities and other groups that might not have the room to store the items.

"Just the logistics of shipping a hundred pounds of clothing from across the country, it's terribly expensive and then you have to worry if you have space on the ground," Dodd said.

Ken Sterns, who spent years researching the best and most effective charities for his book, "With Charity for All," said donating to reputable, well-established charities also helps victims of the next disaster.

"I think most charity experts recommend giving cash donations, but I also tell people that in fact the most valuable contributions are not the contributions made after the fact, but contributions that allow charities, especially disaster relief organizations, to prepare for helping the victims of the next disaster," Sterns said. "We don't know who they are. We don't have a face on them. But we know they are coming."

Rights group calls Egypt draft NGO law restrictive

CAIRO (AP) ? New York-based Human Rights Watch and 40 Egyptian rights groups on Thursday said Egypt's draft law regulating non-governmental organizations would restrict the funding and operation of independent groups.

The contentious bill, proposed by President Mohammed Morsi and currently under debate by the country's interim legislature, would allow the state to control NGOs' activity as well as their domestic and international funding, HRW said. The current form of the bill is a serious regression from earlier versions, it added.

"This draft law dashes all hopes that independent groups could operate freely and independently after the revolution," said Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW's Middle East and North Africa Director.

In a joint statement, 40 Egyptian rights groups accused Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm of seeking to curb the freedom of rights groups through legal restrictions. They said the proposed law potentially gives Egypt's security apparatus the power to suppress rights group, drawing parallels to Egypt's recent past under the rule of longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

They also expressed fears foreign NGOs would be treated with hostility and that vaguely worded legislation would hinder operations or the issuance of work permits.

"The presidency's bill reveals the Muslim Brotherhood's desire to cement full administrative control over all aspects of civic action," the statement said.

Morsi said in a statement Monday that the bill is aimed at committing NGOs to the principles of transparency. In the aftermath of the 2011 uprising that toppled Mubarak, the then-ruling military council shut down several U.S.-funded NGOs and charged a number of their staff, including 16 Americans, with criminal offenses. The Americans left the country and were later tried in absentia. HRW says two international workers are still on trial.

The bill could turn into a new battleground between supporters and opponents of the Islamist president and the Brotherhood, who are already engaged in a tug-of-war over the reform of state institutions.

On Thursday, dozens of Egyptian artists, movie directors, writers and the staff of the Cairo Opera house held a protest in front of the country's oldest music institution to denounce recent measures of the newly appointed culture minister.

They threatened escalation of their protests if the minister Alaa Abdel Aziz did not leave his post.

On Wednesday, Abdel Aziz sacked the head of Opera house in a step seen by the protesters as bending to pressures from Islamists.

Staffers have also closed the curtain on all performances for three days. For the first time in the house's history, the opera Aida ? composed by Giuseppe Verdi and debuted to the world in 1871 in Cairo? was cancelled in protest. Singers instead held up posters on stage that said, "No to Brotherhoodization."

The Brotherhood denies trying to monopolize power for itself or other Islamists. But the confrontation illustrates an entrenched problem in reform since Mubarak's ouster and the rise of the Islamists: Many want to see change and reform in government institutions, but some also don't trust the Morsi and the Brotherhood to do it, fearing they will impose a conservative religious agenda that disregards other viewpoints.

Epigenetic biomarkers may predict if a specific diet and exercise regimen will work

May 30, 2013 ? Would you be more likely to try a diet and exercise regimen if you knew in advance if it would actually help you lose weight? Thanks to a new report published in the June 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, this could become a reality. In the report, scientists identify five epigenetic biomarkers in adolescents that were associated with a better weight loss at the beginning of a weight loss program. Not only could this could ultimately help predict an individual's response to weight loss intervention, but it may offer therapeutic targets for enhancing a weight loss program's effects.

"Successful obesity treatment during adolescence could reduce morbidity at later stages of life and lead to a better quality of life," said Amelia Mart?, Ph.D., Pharm. D., co-author of this study from the Department of Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. "It is crucial to find new markers for obesity treatment. Here, we describe five putative epigenetic biomarkers that could help to predict the response to a weight loss intervention in obese adolescents."

To make this discovery, Mart? and colleagues first performed a global methylation assay in 24 adolescents who had the best and worst response to the EVASYON weight loss program, and then expanded the sample to include 83 more adolescents. Researchers measured an epigenetic marker, DNA methylation levels, in obese adolescents from a blood sample at baseline and again at the end of the 10-week program. Participants were then divided into two groups (high and low responders) according to the weight loss achieved. The researchers found that the baseline DNA methylation levels of five epigenetic markers were associated with better weight loss response. This EVASYON program is a lifestyle and nutritional educational weight loss program that includes a multidisciplinary team of nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and pediatricians. EVASYON was conducted in five Spanish cities: Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander and Zaragoza.

"If you've ever wondered why some people seem to do so well on a diet and exercise plan and other fail so miserably, then now we know that the way that genes express themselves (via epigenetics) plays an important role," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "This report moves us a step closer when we will be able to prescribe a weight loss program tailored to more than just the lifestyle and conditioning level of the patient, but also to his or her particular genetic and epigenetic profile."

Stocks Slump as Buyer Fatigue Starts to Surface ... - Yahoo! Finance

Consumer confidence may be at a five-year high, but investor confidence is being tested for the third time in five trading days. While there has been no change in the tailwind from housing and an improved economic climate that pushed stocks to fresh highs earlier in the week, the need for a new narrative is clear if investors are to stay engaged in a market that hasn't had a pullback in six months.

For Charlie Smith, the chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital, the much-needed bump might come from an unexpected place.

"We have a huge backlog of capital projects in the U.S. that need to be done," he says in the attached video, predicting a faster than expected reduction of the federal deficit could give corporate boards and executives the confidence they need to catch up on overdue projects.

In fact, with a capex-to-revenue ratio that's currently at a fraction of its historic norm, Smith thinks a second-half spending spree of sorts is not out of the cards.

At the same time, cautious comments and downwardly revised GDP estimates out of the OECD have understandably raised concerns in some markets, but Smith thinks the verbal nudge from the Paris-based think thank might be just what Mario Draghi and the ECB need to cathc up with the U.S. and Japanese recoveries.

"It seems like it's their turn," he says, adding that since last July when Draghi said he would 'do whatever it takes,' he really hasn't done a whole lot. "It's time to get his agenda on money creation out of the drawer and get going."

Still, he says certain parts of the market are definitely showing signs of fatigue, especially the yield-oriented defensives that carry uncharacteristically high PE ratios.

''That's a sign to me that the stretch for yield may be getting a little tired," says Smith.

Obama visits Jersey shore today. Will he play skee ball?

President Obama is visiting the Jersey shore Tuesday. No, he and Michelle and the girls aren?t on vacation ? for that they?re going to Martha?s Vineyard later in the summer. Mr. Obama is touring New Jersey beach communities ravaged by superstorm Sandy to see how rebuilding efforts are progressing.

He and Gov. Chris Christie (R) probably will stroll a bit of boardwalk somewhere to help promote the fact that the shore has reopened for business. There?s no word yet on whether cotton candy or skee ball will be involved.

Governor Christie?s taken a lot of criticism from fellow Republicans for hosting Obama, if you remember. Some in the party even blame Christie?s praise of Obama, along with the federal disaster response, for Mitt Romney?s loss last November.

RECOMMENDED: 14 Republicans who might run in 2016

But fewer pixels have been spent on Obama?s role in this bromance. What?s in it for him?

After all, in a political sense the president is building up a possible successor from the other party. If the moderate Christie can win the Republican nomination, he?d probably be a formidable foe for Obama?s side in 2016.

Well, for one thing the Jersey shore stroll shows Obama as bipartisan. It?s a rare moment nowadays when the president gets to engage with Republicans of any sort in a common response to a problem. That?s partly why he traveled to Moore, Okla., on Sunday to meet with officials there and console victims of last week?s tornadoes.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

New Jersey is also the heart of a densely populated region. If Christie runs on a national ticket, he?d probably take his home state, but Obama wants his party to remain as popular there as possible ? for upcoming midterm elections and state races, if nothing else.

But the big reason Obama wants to appear heavily engaged in Jersey reconstruction is the fairly obvious one: Disaster response is a basic function of government on all levels, from municipalities to the Oval Office. It is something that voters all across the country pay close attention to and judge in a fairly nonpartisan manner. If Obama looks like he?s shortchanging New Jersey (and Oklahoma) to a certain extent, they?ll notice that in Ohio.

Remember hurricane Katrina, and the perceived slow federal response, and ?Brownie, you?re doing a heck of a job?? Of course you do. George W. Bush was widely criticized for his actions in the wake of Katrina, including patting his embattled FEMA director, Michael Brown, on the back, rhetorically speaking. Obama does not want that to happen to him.

Georgetown University political scientist Daniel Hopkins wrote an interesting piece on the political fallout of natural disasters for Washington Post?s Wonkblog. In summarizing various studies on the subject, Mr. Hopkins found that voters don?t blame politicians for events beyond their control, such as the disasters themselves. But they do pay close attention to how politicians act in the aftermath.

?Multiple studies indicate that when incumbents act in voters? interests in the wake of a disaster, they are rewarded with increased support. After disasters, people rise to the occasion, and so do voters,? Hopkins concluded.

RECOMMENDED: 14 Republicans who might run in 2016

Mimobot USB Flash Drives

Anyone on the hunt for a USB flash drive has surely stumbled across a few novelty drives. We've reviewed a few as well, like the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives and Dane-Elec Marvel Universe USB Drives. Generally speaking, while these drives may not wow anyone with blazing fast performance or top-of-the-line features, they are the drives that people actually notice, and add to their own wish lists. Mimoco has made its name in the novelty drive category, with drives depicting characters and historical figures as varied as Batman and Albert Einstein. In a recent batch of Mimobot drives, we've been presented with favorites figures from history, pop culture, and current cartoons?Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, rock star Elvis Presley, and My Little Pony fan-favorite Rainbow Dash.

Design
The Mimobot design is pretty standard?a big, elongated head, which doubles as the USB plug cap, and a small body at one end. In the Mimobot Legends series, these figures are all roughly based on actual people. Included in this review are Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as well as rock icon Elvis Presley.

Washington is decked out in regimental dress, white powdered wig, and a removable Colonial-era Tricorn hat, with a cluster of cherries in one hand. On the back of the drive is an image of Washington's own signature.

Lincoln is depicted in, to quote Mimoco, "his classic mid-19th century theater-going duds," complete with vest and bow-tie (I realize the Lincoln assassination was a while ago, but this still seems to be in poor taste). Again, the back of the drive features Lincoln's signature.

Slightly different is the Mimobot Legends Elvis Aloha from Hawaii, which features The King in full jumpsuit regalia. Inspired by the rhinestone studded jumpsuit worn in the Elvis Aloha from Hawaii satellite broadcast in 1973, his outfit includes a Hawaiian lei. Elvis' lip curls in his signature snarl, and he's got considerably more hair on his head than Lincoln does.

The fourth drive sent by Mimoco is from the Mimobot Pop Culture line-up?it's Rainbow Dash from the new version of My Little Pony. Being a pony, Rainbow Dash has no outfit to speak of, but the basic design is the same, with a little body at one end and an elongated head at the other. Rainbow Dash is blue, with a suitably multicolored mane and tail. Mimoco also says that the drive is full of speed, spunk, and "undeniable charisma," but such claims are difficult to verify, even in our testing lab.

Though I could probably make a couple of suggestions about the designs?Washington gets a tricorn hat but Lincoln's famed stovepipe top hat is missing??they all look pretty good.

Bonus Content
All of the Mimobot drives also come with bonus content, centered on the character or figure of the drive. Presidents Washington and Lincoln both offer the same content?a collection of wallpapers for computer, tablet, and smartphone, as well as custom icons and avatar images, all featuring one or both of the presidents. While some of these were interesting, it was a little disappointing that all of these images feature pictures of the drive, rather than any of the more realistic portraits of the actual historical figures.

This same complaint could not be made of the Elvis Aloha from Hawaii drive. In addition to the wallpapers, icons, and avatars, the drive includes two extensive photo albums, one centered around the Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii special?and includes more than 50 photos, documents, and behind the scenes glimpses of that iconic event?and the other centered around Elvis' military service, complete with publicity photos, shots of Elvis in training for combat, and even his honorable discharge papers. There are also two video interviews. All in all, it's an impressive collection of content, and worthwhile for any Elvis fan.

The Rainbow Dash drive also comes with My Little Pony-themed wallpapers, icons, and avatars, but adds sound, with character voices announcing when you've plugged in the drive or copied a folder. Obviously, these candy-colored, ultra-perky extras aren't for everyone, but Ponies and Bronies alike will probably be delighted.

Pricing and Performance
All four Mimobot drives are similar once the caps are pulled off and the drives are plugged in. Each drive uses a USB 2.0 connection, and is formatted in FAT32 for broad compatibility?Windows, Mac, even Linux should all work well with the drives. All four drives were 8GB in capacity, and sell for a list price of $24.95, which works out to roughly $3.11 per GB. While this is a bit pricey for a basic USB drive, the fan-favorite designs and bonus content will add value that most flash drives don't offer. The similar Dane-Elec Marvel Universe drives sell for a similar $3.37 per GB. Take away the fan appeal and these drives are comparable to other basic drives, like the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it USB Drive, a 4GB drive which sells for $1.83 per GB, or the LaCie PetiteKey (16GB), which sells for $1.43 per GB.

Performance wasn't identical among the four drives, but it was similar. In timed data transfer tests George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Elvis all clocked in at roughly 27 MBps (Read) and 5 MBps (Write). Rainbow Dash, on the other hand, came up a bit different, with 23 MBps (read) and 5 MBps (write). To compare, the Marvel Universe drives had speeds of 30MBps (read) and 4MBps (write), the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it (15MBps read; 6MBps write) and the LaCie PetiteKey (14 MBps read, 6 MBps write).

Whether you're looking to show people that you're a hunk of burning love, a fan of Honest Abe, or just a My Little Pony aficionado, Mimoco's novelty flash drives send the message loud and clear. All four Mimobot drives?Washington, Lincoln, Elvis, and Rainbow Dash?offer passable performance, made all the more appealing with eye-catching designs and fan-friendly bonus content. For the performance and feature minded, there's always the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ G2 (16GB), but for everyone else, there's Mimobot that's perfect for you.

In a research letter, Harlan M. Krumholz, M.D., S.M., from Yale University School of Medicine and colleagues, "sought to investigate preferences for participation in the decision-making process among individuals hospitalized with an acute myocardial infarction ([AMI] or heart attack)." The researchers combined data from two similar AMI registries (TRIUMPH and PREMIER) which resulted in 6,636 patients in the study sample who were asked about who should make decisions on treatment options.

"More than two-thirds of patients with AMI indicated a preference to play an active role in the decision-making process, and of those, about a quarter preferred that the decision be theirs alone rather than shared with their physician," the authors found. "Our findings indicate that physicians who aspire to provide patient-centered care should assess patients' decision-making preferences by directly asking each patient."

"Our challenge now is to develop systems that fully respect these preferences and ensure that patients who prefer an active role are given that opportunity," the authors conclude.

Commentary: Shared Decision Making

In an invited commentary, Mack Lipkin, M.D., from NYU Langone School of Medicine, New York City, reviews several of the studies being published online by JAMA Internal Medicine on this topic. Lipkin writes that "shared decision making in the modern era began as informed decision making, a reverse reification of informed consent promulgated in President Reagan's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research."

"I believe a series of prospective studies is needed, starting with taped interviews, to validate current notions of what embodies SDM (shared decision-making), to establish how framing and contextual features alter recollections, and to relate accurately and validly measured strong and weak SDM to the evolution of recalled views about the decisional process. Such results could then be related to health outcomes."

The New French | Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia

France does fancy better than nearly anyone. But the thing is, I generally prefer the hearty country fare and casual everyday bistro food to white-tablecloth haute cuisine. The flavors never feel as rich despite usually being too filling; the mood is often too stuffy. However, up in Chiang Mai, Chef Carlos Manuel Gaudencio has me rethinking that paradigm. Having just taken over the kitchen at Farang Ses, at the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, the thirty-something who spent the past seven years at Le Normandie in Bangkok, recently served me two consecutive six-course meals that were diverse, light and playful takes on Continental classics. Rainbow sherbet palate cleanser? Nope: that?s pink, orange and white frothy soup made from three vegetables and tinted with truffle oil. Ending an enormous meal on steak should just send you over the edge, right? Not if it?s two perfectly sized slices of Wagyu cooked sous vide, encircled by a few tiny carrot trees.

It?s tough to make food fun without being too twee about it, but this man can polka-dot a plate and have even the most jaded grown man cooing at the cuteness of it all. And thank you, chef Carlos, for all the lobster?roasted tails with apple ?marshmallows? and a bisque in which the chunks of meat were cradled in a delicate pastry pot; you really know the way to a woman?s heart. As Dhara Dhevi general manager Torsten van Dullemen says of his Le Grand V?four-trained handsome new maestro, ?The ladies love him.?

Oh, and P.S.: If someone tries to serve you a boring platter of legumes de saison, don?t reject the seemingly random radish and fris?e out of hand?those are a trompe-l?oiel of a marzipan-encased ice cream ball and spot of light sponge cake courtesy of pastry chef Fabrice Leblus. Eat your veggies!

Apple CEO Tim Cook interview at D11 the liveblog

Just a year after Tim Cook sat down for his first non-financial interview as CEO of Apple, the man himself is back for yet another round. He'll be seated in Rancho Palos Verdes, California tomorrow evening at the D11 conference, taking questions from hosts Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, and we'll be liveblogging every moment of it. The interview is taking place with under a fortnight to go until Apple's WWDC, where we're expecting to see details on iOS 7, the Mac lineup and perhaps a glimpse at whatever the company is (presumably) cooking up in the wearables department. The action begins at 6PM PT (9PM ET) tomorrow, so feel free to bookmark this link and return at the time listed below.

A Jewish renaissance, tucked away in a Budapest apartment

Budapest's Teleki Square synagogue has survived two World Wars, the rise of the 'anti-Zionist' Jobbik party, and rotting fixtures ? and is now part of a resurgent Jewish community.

By Andrew Connelly,?Contributor, Helene Bienvenu,?Contributor / May 25, 2013

The Teleki Square shul was established by Jews from Ukraine that settled in Budapest in the 1920s. The shul survived World War two bombings and the religious repression during Communism. Orthodox rules are strictly kept in the shul. Men seat on one side (on the left) whereas women seat on the right, behind a light curtain and don't interact directly with the liturgy.

Too often recently, Hungary has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The elevation of the ultranationalist Jobbik party to the parliament in 2010 and the provocative, anti-Semitic statements made by their members that followed has led many to wonder: Who would want to be Jewish in this Central European, former Communist state?

However, hidden away through a courtyard in Budapest?s ramshackle District VIII, an area of the Hungarian capital known for its high population of Roma gypsies and immigrants, the shul ("synagogue" in Yiddish) on Teleki Square is quietly challenging this notion. It is one of the very last surviving "apartment synagogues" in the country and may well represent the spirited renewal of Jewish life that is currently sweeping the city.

For nearly a century since the shul?s foundation by Hassidic Jews from Ukraine at the beginning of the 1920s, it has survived World War II bombings, Communist oppression, and the damp ? but from the last, only barely.

When chairman Andras Mayer, his brother Gabor, a dozen other members and a South African rabbi decided to renovate the shul ? which like many prayer houses of its era?situated inside an unassuming, shabby apartment ? the ceiling was near collapse and the walls rotting.

?Everyone was waiting for this place to close down and nobody really cared about it," says Gabor. "This was nothing to do with the original Hungarian Jewish establishment. It was simply formed by a bunch of friends, they opened it and it was no one else?s business.?

The shul has never closed down, even during the war, always keeping a skeletal attendance. But in the last few years, the Mayer brothers and friends started to invigorate the community with new and young members.

?People were getting older and dying off. It was a disappearing culture, so it was not just a renovation needed here; we had to start a new life.?

A dwindling population

For centuries Hungary has been home to important and vibrant Jewish communities that, until World War II, lived in relative peace. They acquired a more prominent role in the late 19th century after many Jews took part in the revolution against the Habsburg monarchy in 1848, an event that is still considered a milestone in Hungarian history. Jews grew in number as the prosperous dual monarchy of Austro-Hungary established itself and many prominent figures of world Judaism claim Hungarian roots, such as the father of Zionism, Theodor Herzl.

During the interwar period, up to 25 percent of Budapest?s population was Jewish. But under Mikl?s Horthy?s rule as regent of post-World War I Hungary, numerous anti-Jewish laws were established restricting Hungarian Jews? ability to study and even cohabitate. This was the first of many discriminatory policies, culminating in the deportation of Jewish families with the active collaboration of the Hungarian Gendarmerie. Recently, some local municipalities in rural Hungary have caused uproar by erecting statues and renaming parks in honor of Mr. Horthy.

The deportation was was almost completed when Arrow Cross, the Hungarian fascist party, took power in October 1944 under pressure from Nazi Germany. In just a few weeks, around 450,000 Hungarian Jews perished at Auschwitz, leaving the country's Jewish population a mere fraction of its former self.

At Teleki Square, even with the new blood, it is still sometimes a struggle on Saturday mornings to make a "minyan," the 10-man quorum required for communal worship under Orthodox Jewish law. On the more quiet Sabbath mornings, some members walk to the neighboring synagogue to humbly ask to borrow a man or two.

For Sholom Hurwitz, serving as the shul?s rabbi since its revival, the job can be sometimes challenging.

?After the Holocaust and the Communist suppression of religious organizations, lots of Hungarians forgot their faith, and this shul is part of the Jewish renaissance we see in Budapest," he says. "Not everybody present can read Hebrew, and in the beginning people had their mobile phone out on Sabbath! But there is a strong feeling of community here, and everyone agrees on Orthodox standards. I?m proud to say we are user-friendly and, being so diverse, we?re one of the least sectarian prayer house in the city.?

Renaissance

The "Jewish renaissance" underway in the Hungarian capital is twofold. Previously a tumbledown, crime ridden corner of the city, Budapest?s historic Jewish quarter has morphed into a gentrified nexus of bohemia, replete with Jewish restaurants full of tourists and wine bars peppered amongst the towering synagogues. On a more intellectual level, the elevation of the ultranationalist Jobbik party and the virulently anti-Semitic beliefs held by some of their members have prompted a renewed wave of Jewish political engagement. Initiatives like the Sir?ly cultural center organize direct activism whilst running cultural events designed to encourage observant and non-affiliated Jewish youth alike to explore their heritage.

The majority of the congregation, at Teleki Square, where baseball caps are sported alongside yarmulkes, do not identify themselves as particularly religious, despite the synagogue?s loose affiliation with the Orthodox movement. However, the stringent rules of a kosher kitchen and the Jewish lineage of the members ensure that they can also open their doors to whoever wants to observe.

Certainly within the walls on Sabbath morning, all the traditions are strictly kept, despite the often lighthearted atmosphere that pervades. As the rabbi chants in Hebrew from the hefty scrolls resting atop the bimah (table), the adjacent wall is dominated by a modern white clock inscribed with Hebrew numbers whose hands intriguingly tick backward.

?We wanted a nice ornate clock with a pendulum but some guy brought this back from Israel as a joke and it has stayed. It doesn?t mean anything, although entering this shul is a bit like stepping into a time machine,? Gabor remarks, exposing the modern idiosyncrasies that speckle the pious history of the shul.

The Mayer brothers are almost evangelistic when it comes to their passion for revitalizing and unearthing the Jewish history of the neighborhood, with ambitious plans afoot for two books, a documentary, specialized Teleki Square merchandise including branded yarmulkes, and even homemade brandy.

Not every synagogue has a metallic vat of strong Hungarian "Palinka" fermenting in the kitchen, but then the shul is not like other synagogues. The equipment is brand-new, the apple mush has been checked for worms, and the whole process supervised by the resident rabbi thus denoting the potent house spirit to be kosher.

?I think we are going to become very popular,? muses Andras. However, discussions about the local area are always bittersweet.

?The saddest part about the history of this neighborhood is that people don?t know about it. Sometimes that?s for the best because there have been some nasty stories going on in some of the houses here. During the war this was one of the only sites of Jewish resistance against the Nazis, and there was a big bloodshed as a result. With brooms they were sweeping up the blood on the streets.?

In Jobbik's shadow

Mere blocks away stands a foreboding gray edifice emblazoned with the banner of the Jobbik party, currently the third largest political force in the Hungarian parliament.

Its vocal "anti-Zionist" stance has been accused by some as being a smokescreen for general anti-semitism, a charge that Jobbik vigorously denies, and many have drawn comparisons between the uniformed members present at their political rallies and soldiers of the Arrow Cross. Despite ? or more likely because of ? the high Roma and migrant population in District VIII, they maintain a high profile here.

Andras pays little heed to Jobbik. ?People make distinctions between Nazis, neo-Nazis, and Arrow Cross, but what difference does that make to me? They don?t care what kind of Jew I am and I don?t care what kind of Nazi they are.?

In a country with a tragic past too often misunderstood and manipulated for political gain, the restoration of the Teleki Square shul seems very much the symbol of the wider reconstitution of Hungary?s Jewish identity: recovering, resilient, and threatened, but reasserting itself with characteristic quirkiness.

Chief Keef Threatens to Assault Katy Perry After She Disses His Song

  • Brandi Glanville vs. LeAnn Rimes

Quite simply, LeAnne stole Brandi's husband, Eddie Cibrian, and made him her own. Since then, <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2013/02/25/brandi-glanville-opens-up-about-leann-rimes-adrienne-maloof-plastic-surgery-and/">the Real Housewife has been getting her public revenge (book included)</a>, and the feud between the two women just keeps making headlines.

  • Sharon and Kelly Osbourne vs. Lady Gaga

It's quite the saga with these three, really: It all started when Kelly Osbourne <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/kelly-osbourne-has-harsh-words-for-lady-404664">called Gaga a"Butterface,"</a> then jokingly asked if the <a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/4547126/Kelly-Osbourne-reckons-Lady-Gaga-is-pregnant.html">singer is pregnant when she gained weight</a>. Gaga's loyal fans took it to heart, apparently, and in an interview later on, Osbourne said they bullied her and called them <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/09/kelly-osbourne-lady-gaga-bullying-fat_n_2440673.html?utm_hp_ref=social-media">"the worst."</a> In response (and in her Little Monsters defense), Gaga wrote an open letter to the young Osbourne and said her work "is rooted in criticism, judgment." That's when Kelly's mother, Sharon Osbourne, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/11/sharon-osbourne-lady-gaga-kelly-osbourne_n_2455327.html?utm_hp_ref=celebrity">jumped in and called Gaga a "publicly seeking hypocrite and an attention seeker."</a> Two days later, Gaga replied to Sharon and urged the Osbournes to cease fire and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/13/lady-gaga-kelly-osbourne-feud-responds-sharon-osbourne_n_2467273.html">make the world a better place</a>.

  • Jennifer Lawrence vs. Kristen Stewart

When Lawrence's "The Hunger Games" came out, it was naturally compared to "Twilight," both huge YA franchises. <a href="http://www.gossipcop.com/twilight-hunger-games-feud-fight-kristen-stewart-jennifer-lawrence-robert-pattinson-liam-hemsworth/">Rumors circulated at the time</a> that "Jennifer really wants to overthrow Kristen as Hollywood's young darling," and that Stewart called Lawrence "plain" in response. But after the two beauties chatted it up at the Oscars (Lawrence inquired about Stewart's crutches, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/27/kristen-stewart-jennifer-lawrence-oscars_n_2774474.html">Stewart cheered on when Lawrence won best actress</a>), the rumors subsided. Until the sequel?

  • Hilary Duff vs. Lindsay Lohan

Take two Disney starlets and one prepubescent popstar and you have a recipe for one of the most discussed celebrity feuds of the 2000s. Back in 2002, Aaron Carter reportedly broke up with or cheated on Hilary Duff, who he was dating for two years, to hook up with Lindsay Lohan. The 15-year-old Casanova then left Lohan to get back together with Duff. Though the girls should have been furious with Carter, they instead turned on each other. Their feud played out in the pages of magazines with both actresses <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/8669450/ns/today-entertainment/t/lohan-says-duff-rebuffed-her-peace-attempt/" target="_hplink">taking shots at each other for years. </a> By 2007 the girls put their past behind them and made up. "We are both adults and whatever happened, happened when we were young," Duff <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20033534,00.html" target="_hplink">told <em>People</em></a>. "It's over."

  • Jon Hamm vs. Kim Kardashian

"Mad Men" star Jon Hamm recently made some unflattering <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/09/jon-hamm-slams-kim-kardashian-idiot-culture_n_1335411.html" target="_hplink">comments to <em>Elle UK</em> </a>about celebrity culture, putting reality TV queen Kim Kardashian in his crosshairs. "Whether it's Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated. Being a f**king idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you're rewarded significantly," he told the magazine. Kim responded on Twitter, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/12/kim-kardashian-responds-jon-hamm-stupid_n_1339923.html?ref=the-kardashians" target="_hplink">writing</a>: "I just heard about the comment Jon Hamm made about me in an interview. I respect Jon and I am a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that not everyone takes the same path in life. We're all working hard and we all have to respect one another. Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs, and creates, 'stupid,' is in my opinion careless." When asked about his comments, <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/jon_hamm_kim_kardashian_slam_not/301003#ixzz1p6Yz2tbE" target="_hplink">Hamm told E! News</a>, "It's surprising to me that this has become remotely a story. I don't know Ms. Kardashian. I know her public persona. What I said was meant to be more on pervasiveness of something in culture, not personal, but she took offense to it and that is her right."

  • Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl

It's a known fact that Courtney Love hates former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, and he is by no means fond of her. The two have been feuding over the rights to Nirvana's music since Kurt Cobain killed himself in 1994. Most recently, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/15/courtney-love-explains-foo-fighters-rant_n_1095238.html" target="_hplink">Courtney explained</a> why she hates the Foo Fighters frontman, after playing a show in Brazil. "What I was saying, is Dave makes $5 million a show, he doesn't need the money. His mother's a banker, his father's a stock broker and he's making $5 million a show. Why the f**k then does he have a Nivana Inc. credit card and I don't? And last week he bought an Aston Martin on it," she said.

  • Miley vs. Selena Gomez & Demi Lovato

Disney starlets do not play nice. In 2008, teen queen Miley Cyrus went head to head with Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. BFFs Selena and Demi used to make goofy videos they would post to YouTube, much to the chagrin of Miley as it turned out. Miley and her BFF Mandy made a parody video where they mocked the other girls, making fun of their makeup and the gap in Demi's front teeth. The feud appeared to come out of nowhere. "To be honest I don't know what happened," <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2008/08/01/the-miley-cyrus-selena-gomez-demi-lovato-feud-nonexistent/" target="_hplink">Selena told MTV</a>. "I though we were okay, but to be honest, I don't even know [Miley and Mandy]. And Demi has never met Miley. It's interesting -- that's all I'm going to say about it." They all eventually made up and became friends. <a href="http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00021443.html" target="_hplink">Miley addressed the feud in a YouTube video in 2009: </a> "So everyone's thinking there's a big feud between me and Selena and Demi. Actually, I'm going to have meatloaf with Demi tonight. I'm riding my bike to Demi's house. So I'm going to be partying with Demi 'cause we're friends, and I love her and she is always there for me. She is one of my bestest friends."

  • Donald Trump vs. Rosie O'Donnell

There are many celebs who have feuded with Donald Trump, but his ongoing fight with Rosie O'Donnell remains the most memorable. In 2006, Rosie criticized Trump for not dethroning Miss USA Tara Conner after her drug scandal and she called him a "pimp" and "snake oil salesman." Never one to take things lying down, Trump responded by calling her a "big, fat pig" and a "loser." Their feud dragged on until no one wanted to hear what either of them had to say and it unfortunately started up again. <a href="http://www.accesshollywood.com/donald-trump-and-rosie-odonnell-feud-reignited_article_57986" target="_hplink">In December 2011, Trump tweeted</a>, "Same last name, same bad ratings - @lawrence and @rosie," and linked to a YouTube clip of himself ranting about how neither of their talk shows were doing well. Rosie tweeted back, "How many billionaires sell ties and have crappy non reality shows -- none - go back to selling snake oil #bankruptmuch?" Neither will spare the public of their immaturity and their feud continues today.

  • Will.i.am vs. Perez Hilton

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton was confronted by the Black Eyed Peas at the Much Music Video Awards in 2009 and began hurling insults at Will.i.am and the rest of the band. Perez was <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/22/perez-hilton-called-willi_n_219088.html" target="_hplink">punched in the face</a> by Will.i.am's manager and the blogger later tweeted, "I was assaulted by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding. Please, I need a police report. No joke." Will.i.am later denied Hilton's claims and Hilton shot back with a 12-minute video blasting the Black Eyed Pea as a "disgusting human being" and "a fucking liar." Perez later sued Will.i.am's manager and a s<a href="http://wonderwall.msn.com/music/perez-hilton-black-eyed-peas-manager-settle-suit-1537413.story" target="_hplink">ettlement was reached.</a>

  • Lindsay Lohan vs. Brandon Davis

Who needs enemies when you have friends like Brandon Davis? Back in 2006, Lindsay Lohan was pals with Paris Hilton, until Paris accused her of trying to steal her boyfriend, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos. Once Lindsay was on the outs with her socialite friends, oil heir Davis took it upon himself to brand Lohan with a nickname. While drunk in LA one night, Davis was filmed ranting about Lohan, <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2006/05/17/paris-and-brandon-davis-the-incredible-hatred-toward-lindsay/#.T2FG_HJSTdc" target="_hplink">dubbing her "fire crotch," and making other rude and disgusting claims. </a>

  • Kelly Osbourne vs. Christina Aguilera

These ladies need to learn to keep their comments to themselves. Back in the day, Christina Aguilera apparently used to call Kelly Osbourne fat, and now that Kelly has slimmed down and Christina has gained a few pounds the tables have turned. Osbourne made sure to call attention to the singer's weight gain, not once, but twice in 2011. "Maybe she is just becoming the fat bitch she was born to be. I don't know. She was a c**t to me. And she bought my house," Osbourne said <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/04/kelly-osbourne-calls-christina-aguilera-a-fat-bitch_n_918063.html" target="_hplink">during an episode of "Fashion Police" that aired in August.</a> "She called me fat for so many f***ing years, so you know what? F**k you! You're fat too." Then in October, the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/17/kelly-osbourne-i-was-never-as-fat-as-christina-aguilera_n_1015490.html" target="_hplink">singer was again the topic of discussion on the show: </a> "Lady Marmalade got into the peanut better again," quipped co-host Joan Rivers when criticizing Aguilera's too-tight outfit. "She called me fat for years, I was never that fat," Osbourne said and later added, "Trust me, I'm a 2/4. That is not a 2/4."

  • Shannen Doherty vs. Alyssa Milano

Shannen Doherty has a reputation as Hollywood's bad girl and feuded with nearly all of her "Beverly Hills, 90210" castmates, and yet it was her feud with Alyssa Milano that will go down as the worst. The "Charmed" co-stars began fighting on set during the third season and it was reported that Shannen was jealous of Alyssa's popularity. Tension ran high on set and things grew so heated, producers had to bring in a mediator to resolve their issues. When they couldn't work things out, Shannen left the show.

  • Mariah Carey vs. Eminem

Is there anyone Eminem hasn't feuded with? Eminem and Mariah Carey began to spar after he claimed that they used to have a sexual relationship. Mariah denied the relationship, telling Larry King, "I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don't consider that dating somebody." Mariah later mocked his claim in her video for "Obsessed," which featured an Eminem look-alike who was obsessed with her. The rapper retaliated with a number of songs that mentioned Carey and threatened to release nude photos of the singer as well as voicemails to prove they dated. In the song "The Warning" he raps: "Shut the fuck up before I put up all the phone calls you made to my house when you were "Wild N' Out" before Nick, when you was on my dick and give you something to smile about."

  • Charlie Sheen vs. Chuck Lorre

When Charlie Sheen lost his mind in 2011, he dug his own grave and lost his job as the highest paid actor on television. Sheen went on a rampage, verbally attacking "Two and a Half Men" showrunner Chuck Lorre, after CBS suspended the series due to Sheen's insane behavior. After Lorre make a joke about Sheen, the <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20469063,00.html" target="_hplink">actor attacked him, calling Lorre a "clown" </a>, and made a strange anti-Semitic dig, saying his real name is "Chaim Levine" (though his name is actually Charles Michael Levine). Sheen continued to blast Lorre as a "stupid, stupid little man and a p*ssy punk that I never want to be like." Now that Sheen appears to be sober, Lorre has <a href="http://articles.nydailynews.com/2012-01-11/news/30618049_1_half-men-fx-network-leaf" target="_hplink">chosen to take the high road.</a> "I wish him well. I'm glad he's happy and sober," he said in January 2012.

  • Lauren Conrad vs. Heidi and Spencer

"You know what you did," Lauren Conrad screamed at Heidi Montag on an episode of "The Hills." Lauren and Heidi's friendship began to dissolve in 2007, when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt. "He's a sucky person," she infamously told her one-time best friend. Heidi chose a relationship with Spencer over a friendship with Lauren and spread a rumor there was a<a href="http://www.justjared.com/2008/05/01/heidi-montag-lauren-conrad-feud/" target="_hplink"> Lauren Conrad sex tape floating around. </a> Heidi tried to repair things with Lauren, but she wasn't having it. "I want to forgive you and I want to forget you," Lauren told her as <a href="http://www.sheknows.com/living/march-madness-mix-up-gallery/cry-faces/lauren-conrad-3" target="_hplink">mascara ran down her face</a>. The feud eventually ended but they never repaired their friendship. As Spencer began to fade into obscurity he tried make himself relevant by burying the hatchet with Conrad, <a href="http://tv.yahoo.com/news/lauren-conrad-planning-ignore-spencer-pratts-apology-000504559.html" target="_hplink">wishing her a happy birthday</a> on Twitter in February 2012.

  • Chris Christie vs. Snooki

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has no love for the "Jersey Shore" cast and Snooki isn't fond of him either. Christie has been vocal about his distaste for the cast and has referred to them as "losers," and also vetoed a $420,000 tax credit for the MTV reality show in September 2011. Snooki doesn't appriaciate being called a loser and the pint-size reality star <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/01/snooki-refuses-to-vote-for-chris-christie_n_1247211.html" target="_hplink">tweeted that she wouldn't be voting for Christie for president </a> and added, "Love always, the "buffoons" from that degrading Jersey Shore show." Christie wasn't and isn't running for president, but Snooki regardless explained: "I DEF don't want a judgmental president who has NEVER met me in person. F that. idc who exploits me. But for a man wanting to be president&calling us names when he's never met us..no thanks. I'll stick w Obama."

  • Kid Rock vs. Steven Tyler

Kid Rock had a big problem with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler taking on a new gig as a judge on "American Idol" in 2010. Kid Rock didn't believe a true rock star would even think about working for a show like "Idol" and proceeded to trash Tyler for it. <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/39954827/ns/today-entertainment/t/kid-rock-slams-steven-tylers-american-idol-gig/#.T2ICPGLLwbI" target="_hplink">Rock told<em> Entertainment Weekly,</em></a> "I think it's the stupidest thing he's ever done in his life. He's a sacred American institution of rock and roll, and he just threw it all out the window. Just stomped on it and se it on fire." At a press conference, Tyler <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/steven-tyler-on-kid-rock-hes-just-jealous-20101105" target="_hplink">responded</a>, "He's just jealous, he's just jealous. And he's working on his new record, so God bless him."

  • Chris Brown vs. Miranda Lambert

Miranda Lambert was not happy to see Chris Brown performing at the Grammy Awards. "And Chris Brown Twice? I don't get it. He beat on a girl...Not cool that we act like that didn't happen," she tweeted referencing Brown's brutal 2009 assault on Rihanna. Brown responded indirectly by tweeting, "Hate all you want because I got a grammy now! That's the ultimate f*** off." Then at her concert, Lambert held up a handwritten poster that read, "Take notes Chris Brown" and said to the audience, "Listen, I just need to speak my mind. Where I come from, beating up on a women is never OK. So that's why my daddy taught me early on in life how to use a shotgun." Brown fired back in a series of tweets: "Using my name to get publicity? I love it! Perform your heart out! Go buy @miranda_lambert! So motivational and "PERFECT." Goodnight to all the people who live life and who aren't stuck in the past!"

  • Brett Ratner v. Olivia Munn

In actress Olivia Munn's book "Suck It, Wonder Woman," she recounts her brief romantic dalliance with director Brett Ratner and didn't have anything nice to say about the size of his penis. Ratner <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/243711/20111104/brett-ratner-admits-banged-olivia-munn-promoting.htm" target="_hplink">addressed the claims on "Attack of the Show" saying</a>, "I used to date Olivia Munn, I'll be honest with everyone here, when she was Lisa...she wasn't Asian back then." He continued: "She was hanging out on my set of 'After the Sunset,' I banged her a few times. But I forgot her...because she changed her name...I didn't know it was the same person, so when she came and auditioned for me for a TV show I forgot her, she got pissed off, and she made up all these stories about me eating shrimp and masturbating in my trailer." Munn responded by tweeting a link to a <em>Cosmo</em> article she had written titled, "How to Stand up to an A-Hole," that detailed an incident with a director she called the "Douche."

  • LeAnn Rimes vs. Giuliana Rancic

LeAnn Rimes is skinny -- so skinny that she has people worrying that she's not eating. The equally skinny Giuliana Rancic was one those people. Pot, meet kettle. The two skinny ladies battled it out <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/30/leann-rimes-responds-giuliana-rancic_n_941579.html" target="_hplink">telling each other to eat a sandwich. </a>

  • Ciara vs. Rihanna

Rihanna and Ciara -- who both dated Chris Brown in the past -- got into a heated public spat in February 2011. First Ciara made a dig at Rihanna on "Fashion Police," saying: "I ran into her recently at a party. She wasn't the nicest. It's crazy because I've always loved and respected what she's done in fashion. It wasn't the most pleasant run-in." When Rihanna heard what Ciara had said, she fired back on Twitter. "My bad Ci, did I forget to tip you? How rude of me.... You gangsta huh? Ha." They volleyed insults and threats at each other and then Rihanna called a truce. "Ciara baby, I love you girl! You hurt my feelings real bad on TV! I'm heartbroken! That's why I retaliated this way! So sorry! Let's make up." Ciara accepted the apology and that was that.

  • Kourtney Kardashian vs. Farrah Abraham

This might be one of the most ridiculous celebrity fights of all time. "Teen Mom" cast member Farrah Abraham didn't think things through when she criticized Kourtney Kardashian on Twitter. "I'm shocked Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant again Did she not learn anything from TEEN MOM? Maybe its a fake pregnancy like kims wedding SAD," she tweeted. Kourtney was understandably confused by the attack and tweeted back, "Why would I have anything to do with Teen Mom? I'm 32 years old! I may look young, honey, but don't get it twisted." While Kourtney suggested that Farrah had no idea what she was talking about, the "Teen Mom" star couldn't resist firing back at her: "Guess what! Age and money honestly do not change a person's poor choice. Quit making excuses," she tweeted. Kourtney's boyfriend Scott Disick also got in on the fight, sarcastically tweeting at Farrah, "We're not teenagers, ya f**king moron." When asked if he knew who she was, he responded, ""I just thought she was some shit stain on Twitter, no?" Sadly, this Twitter fight actually continued with Farrah later tweeting, "4 all who mistunderstood: regards to kourtney K.~I hope she takes her relationship w/her boyfriend more serious 4 their children-takecare." Shortly after, however, she couldn't resist getting one more word in with a jab at Disick: "Caught wind of these dramatic articles, w/ loser scott disick or some boyfriend of kourtneys, is Shit Stain < racist 4 black?" she wrote. "Great dad! NOT."

  • Anthony Bourdain vs. Paula Deen

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain is not a fan of Paula Deen's cooking. In 2011 he told <em>TV Guide</em> she was "the worst, most dangerous person to America." Deen responded, claiming, "You know, not everybody can afford to pay $58 for prime rib or $650 for a bottle of wine. My friends and I cook for regular families who worry about feeding their kids and paying the bills . . . It wasn't that long ago that I was struggling to feed my family, too." Months later, after Deen announced she has Type 2 diabetes and was now a paid spokeswoman for a diabetes medication, Bourdain <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20562258,00.html" target="_hplink">responded with a thinly veiled tweet</a>: "Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later." Deen fired back that Bourdain should "get a life".

  • Jonah Hill vs. Matthew Morrison

Jonah Hill made it clear he was no fan of "Glee" star Matthew Morrison, when he appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" in September 2011. Hill recalled a "douchey Hollywood party" where he tried to eavesdrop on a conversation between "Gossip Girl" actor Chace Crawford and Morrison, who had<a href="http://www.dlisted.com/2011/09/23/fight-fight-jonah-hill-vs-matthew-morrison" target="_hplink"> made a joke at Hill's expense at an event a few weeks earlier</a>. He then overheard the two drop his name and start laughing. Hill took the opportunity on "Late Night" to call out the "Glee" actor: "Matthew Morrison, you better bring your sh*t next time I see you...I'd like to see him sing his way out of this one," he said. Morrison responded by sending a goofy video to "Late Night," where he finished his joke about Hill and then accepted the actor's challenge, saying, "Nobody messes with someone from musical theater!" This extremely dorky feud <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1673980/jonah-hill-matthew-morrison-sitter.jhtml" target="_hplink">eventually just blew over</a>.

  • Chelsea Handler vs. Michelle "Bombshell" McGee

Chelsea Handler <a href="http://blog.zap2it.com/pop2it/2010/04/chelsea-handler-goes-after-michelle-bombshell-mcgee-some-more.html" target="_hplink">started a feud with Jesse James' tattooed mistress Michelle "Bombshell" McGee in 2010,</a> with a joke she wrote on her blog: "I guess she doesn't read magazines which makes sense, since she basically has one on her face." McGee responded on her Facebook page writing: "Chelsea, here's some free advice: Use some of that Botox from your forehead and put it in your flabby underarm skin. I've seen better wings in a bucket of KFC chicken." And later wrote, ""In all seriousness, Im a big fan of 'Chelsea Lately' ... I was laughing my ass off.... feel so honored to have a transexual [sic] poke fun of me ..." Don't mess with a comedian -- Handler didn't hold back with her response to McGee: "First of all, look at my forehead, you dumb bitch, okay? It moves ... You have a tattoo on your forehead, so you have had a needle in your forehead -- and probably Jesse James' balls. So shut your face."

  • Ryan Murphy vs. Kings of Leon

This feud started after Kings of Leon declined to allow the Fox series "Glee," to cover one of its songs on a future episode. "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy was pissed and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/26/kings-of-leon-vs-glee-nathan-followill-fires-back-at-ryan-murphy-in-homophobic-rant_n_814351.html" target="_hplink">sent a message to the band via <em>The Hollywood Reporter</em></a>: "F**K you, Kings of Leon," he said. "They're self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It's like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music." KOL member Nathan Followill fired back with a homophobic dig at openly gay Murphy, tweeting: "Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say f**k." Realizing how his comments could be seen, Followill later tweeted: "I'm sorry 4 anyone that misconstrued my comments as homophobic or misogynistic. I'm so not that kind of person. I really do apologize."

  • Tom Cruise vs. Brooke Shields

In 2005, Tom Cruise seemed to have lost his marbles when he jumped on couches on Oprah's talkshow. He then lashed out at actress Brooke Shields, while on the "Today" show, telling Matt Lauer that Shields should not have taken antidepressants to combat the postpartum depression she was suffering from after the birth of her first child. Cruise, a Scientologist who shuns psychiatry, insisted the depression could be treated with "vitamins and exercise." Shields responded by writing an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/01/opinion/01shields.html" target="_hplink">op-ed piece in the <em>New York Times,</em> writing</a>: "I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Mr. Cruise has never suffered from postpartum depression ... And comments like those made by Tom Cruise are a disservice to mothers everywhere ... If any good can come of Mr. Cruise's ridiculous rant, let's hope that it gives much-needed attention to a serious disease." Cruise later apologized to <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,1531255,00.html" target="_hplink">Shields, the actress told Jay Leno </a>a year later. "He came over to my house and he gave me a heartfelt apology. And he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing and for everything that happened," she said.

  • Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West

Kayne West infamously hijacked Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 Video Music Awards, interrupting her to say, "I'm really happy for you. I'ma let you finish, but Beyonc? had one of the best videos of all time." Swift was dumbstruck by the incident and it seemed as if she didn't want to get into it with the rapper. "I don't know him, and I've never met him, so..." she said. "I don't want to start anything because I had a great night tonight." A year later she was literally singing a different tune. At the 2010 VMAs she p<a href="http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2010/09/13/taylor-swift-kanye-west-mtv-video-music-awards-youre-still-an-innocent-time-we-had-a-toast/" target="_hplink">erformed her new song</a> "You're Still an Innocent," a reference to the previous year's incident with West, basically calling him immature. "Thirty-two and still growing up now / who you are is not what you did / you're still an innocent," she sang. Kanye didn't have any right to fire back, but of course he did. At a concert in New York City, <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2010/11/24/kanye-west-concert-taylor-swift/" target="_hplink">West blasted Swift to his fans</a>: "Everybody needs a villain, don't we? We need to blame someone at all times ... I was emotional, that was not exactly the way I wanted to word it, but I wrote it, I rode it, just as Taylor never came to my defense in any interview, and rode the waves and rode it and rode it." The feud seems to have blown over, as Swift wore a blouse from Kanye West's spring 2012 collection in the <a href="http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2012/03/07/taylor-swift-kanye-west-design-harpers-bazaar-australia/" target="_hplink">pages of <em>Harper's Bazaar.</em> </a>
