NBA Rumors: Orlando Magic Coaching Search to Include Mike Malone, Brian Shaw, Two Others, According to Report

Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE- Presswire

The Orlando Magic will interview at least four candidates for their vacant head-coaching position, reports Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel: Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone, Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw, Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Quin Snyder, and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Jacque Vaughn. Though it's possible that Magic general manager Rob Hennigan will expand the search beyond four, there's no guarantee he will.

Malone and Shaw are two of the league's most widely respected assistant coaches. The son of former Magic assistant coach Brendan Malone, Mike Malone has also served as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets. Shaw, a former Magic player, was one of Phil Jackson's most trusted assistant with the Lakers, but left the team upon Jackson's retirement in 2011 when it hired Mike Brown instead of promoting Shaw.

Snyder was a finalist in the Charlotte Bobcats' coaching search earlier in 2012, only to lose the job to St. John's assistant coach Mike Dunlap. He also coached the University of Missouri.

Vaughn is, like Shaw, a former Magic point guard. After his playing days ended, he stayed with the Spurs as an assistant coach, a position he's held for two seasons.
