Sri Lanka to Export Rice to Africa and Middle East

SRI LANKA - Sri Lanka which was a rice importing country until recently has achieved self sufficiency in rice production due to extensive encouragement made for paddy cultivation by the government by providing various incentives including fertiliser subsidy.

At present the country possesses a large stock of excess rice and initiatives made by the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade has resulted in receiving several orders for over 100,000 metric tons of rice.

These orders have been received from Kenya, South Africa, Dubai, Somalia and Ethiopia. Already 6,000 metric tons of rice to South Africa and 3,000 metric tons to Dubai have been exported.

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade said that every week, twenty five containers of rice are shipped to Dubai while fifteen containers each are shipped to South Africa, Ethiopia and Somalia.
