Worst Home Improvement Ideas | Flooring hunter

In our last post we talked about home improvement ideas that adds value to property, today will talk about things most people do to their home which doesn?t add value and in some instances even diminish the value of homes.

Here are some home improvement ideas that are considered by some experts as liabilities:

1. Customized Spaces

You can take the classic examples of swimming pools and wine cellars. When it all boils down to it they really don?t add that much.

Swimming pools need constant upkeep and maintenance. They crack and equipment needs upgrade. Some people would want one and really be willing to pay for it but most of us would rather not.

A wine cellar, how many people you know have a wine cellar at home? It can be a bore if you don?t have a lot of signature bottles to put in those shelves or racks and lets face it, most of us would rather shell out bucks for a great beer but not hundreds of dollars on great wine.

2. Roofs

The rule of thumb here: if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it. It?s expensive and it is a great inconvenience. Believe it or not, most people really doesn?t care what your roof looks what they care about is that it doesn?t leak.

3. Garage

Not having one can be a real shame especially if you?re working to improve the property?s salability. It?s very important as most homebuyers are looking for a home with at least a 2-vehicle garage.

4. Technology and appliances

This is a rather tricky part that most homeowners have a hard time balancing in as one should not over invest in technology because it is changing everyday but outdated appliances also doesn?t help your home?s status in the real estate market.

5. Don?t go out of the radar

This simply means not to get ahead of a neighbor and the neighborhood. Don?t over invest and overbuild if you don?t plan to retire in that home or at least stay in it for the next 10 years or so. Try to stay within the reasonable limits of the community just in case you have to move out unexpectedly.

Coming up with ideas for improvement is not a bad thing especially if the entire household would benefit from it, but while you?re on the process why not make that idea a great one, right?
